"the perfect is the enemy of the good"

This is my TENTH year doing this thing. Crazy!

Check out some previous FAWM songs (and others) done up proper at my band Gentle Brontosaurus's site here:
facebook.com/GentleBrontosaurus
gentlebrontosaurus.bandcamp.com
@ndavies = keys, pocket trumpet, vox.
me = keys, guitar, vox.

Also check out Vowl Sounds, collabs with @vomvorton, also made possible via FAWM: facebook.com/vowlsoundsmusic
soundcloud.com/vowl-sounds
https://vowlsounds.bandcamp.com/releases

other musics from the past you could also listen to: tldrband.com (surf-tinged indie rock; I sang), www.facebook.com/RedTapeDiaries (math-tinged power pop; I played keys). miscellaneousowl.bandcamp.com contains the detritus of FAWMs past.

It's been a sad year, so... sad songs this year.

@b3nut
Thanks for the kind comment on "Another Song"...I laughed off the idea at first, then my brain just took off with it, so I went along for the ride. I think it's the only time I've ever started a song with a lyric and then figured out music to put it to, just sat down and started typing words into Google Docs, which is actually a godsend for songwriting workflows incidentally! Cheers!

Thank you for all the kind comments this FAWM! As ever, it's been a pleasure to listen in to your new stuff. I think I suggested a collab this time last year, but haven't been able to get my shit together sufficiently to write something that might be appropriate 😂 . Always next year I guess...
[avatar]
Congrats on your Trophy!!
[avatar]
I know, right up your alley, or tree.

I stumbled on this and figured you should have it; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parrot_astrology

Re the guitar tone in my new tune, the dirt is from a RAT distortion into a fuzz pedal, then a bit of reverb. But my secret weapon is this Electro Harmonix Synth 9 pedal I've got that simulates keyboard sounds from your guitar signal. I rarely use it to make actual keyboard sounds but there's a setting for an analog synth lead. I've found if I turn the gain up on that, it's instant unhinged, feedback madness!

@crisp1
Thanks for your comments on Slow the Dog Down. It's meant to be symbolic of any situation where the folks in charge think they know what they're doing and then it turns out they don't. Cheers!
[avatar]
Dear @owl, thank you so kindly for your comments on "New Relationship Energy"! I look forward to listening to you. (Sorry to hear this has been a sad year.)
[avatar]
Thanks for spending your drive time with the "Girl on the Radio". It was good to have you along for the ride.
[avatar]
Thank you and yes I have seen The Devil and Daniel Johnston a few times, I had watched it a few days before writing that song actually. There's also a short film on YouTube called "Hi, How Are You Daniel Johnston?" which I quoted in my song, where he says "I chose the darker side...you should go with the light". Daniel embodied an aspect of songwriting that is so crucial. He wasn't the best piano or guitar player but dear god the amount of emotion that man could channel from the other realm was more than anyone else I know.
[avatar]
thank you so much for listening to my song!! :)
[avatar]
i think "small empty votive candle jar" counts as an origin story. :)
[avatar]
if you are up for a collab, i have written a lyric inspired by the film Mouchette by robert bresson, that i think would be ideal for you. if you would like to see the lyric, email me at BWhi51@yahoo.com.

@atam94
Thanks for listening to my song! It's just a regular violin bow with a decent amount of effects to alter the sound coming out of it. I'm glad you enjoyed listening 😊
[avatar]
Yeah, The Forgotten Arm is sooo good at that kind song. Even just listening to I Was Thinking I Could Clean Up For Christmas - you know they're doomed from the title. She's a special one is our Aimee.

@brisk
Ha, the dining tables of the UK are groaning with the sheer weight of delicious aspic - morning, noon and night.
[avatar]
@owl I am *so* stuck for ideas right now, I might have to!

(And actually, I do have an idea)
[avatar]
@brisk
I always assumed this was a UK based twitter account, but maybe it isn't - but either way, it's all true! https://twitter.com/70s_party

I'm no expert on tights, but I did a little research and was for relieved that seven existed... because ten did not scan AT ALL.

And thank you for 1000 Volt Ghost part 2! Weirdly, the perfect song right now. There must be something numinous lingering in the aether.

@brisk
We don't have crop dusting planes. I suppose our fields are just smaller? Or we don't use the kind of red-blooded, all-American pesticides that you can? My only real understanding of them comes from North By Northwest - so basically they seem like the coolest thing ever!
[avatar]
@brisk
Ha, it's funny that you singled out the crop dusting. In my mind, "dusting" was a gangstery synonym for murdering - so to me that was an amusing and pointless bit of overkill from our herculeanly mysanthropic mysanthrope. Actually, I think maybe I dreamt that meaning as I can't really find reference to it on t'internet. So it kind of just looks like they are just really interested in pest control.

edit: no wait: look! https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/dusting+someone

Thank you! I seem to be getting a lot of Beatles comments at the moment (from everyone, not just you). I think I need to go deliberately un-Beatles for a bit (or just lean into it, that's probably going to be easier 🤔 ). Anyway, appreciate the comments as always :)
[avatar]
thanks for dropping by and taking a listen Owl!!
[avatar]
"bins have a way of filling up" was the first line I wrote (I wrote it yesterday while emptying the bins)
[avatar]
Hi! Thank you very much for your thoughtful comments on my songs. I've always had a lot of respect for/envy of your songwriting abilities, so I don't take your praise lightly.
[avatar]
Thanks! I don't play - I do own an electronic kit, but found it *way* harder than I expected, so it's gathering dust in a wardrobe... I use a mix of self-programmed and MIDI grooves. Often the groove is only mostly right, so I have to tweak it to fit the song, etc. But the song almost always dictates the drums - I don't really just fire up drum grooves then write to them.
[avatar]
@tangle
Yay! 1000 volt ghost deserves a loving fam.
[avatar]
Do it! Celebrate the floof!
[avatar]
Thanks for the comments on the teeth song. I have never put anybody else’s teeth in my mouth as I agree that that would be weird and possibly unhygienic (though presumably one would brush them first). But I liked the image of using these cast off body parts to rejuvenate an old body! Not sure if that makes it more or less weird…
[avatar]
@b3nut
Thanks for the lovely comments on Pass This Way!
[avatar]
Great FAWM tribute. All your lyric sets are interesting and compelling. Such a variety of presentation. Wow
[avatar]
Thanks for your listen to my "Shazzam" collab. I really didn't think anyone might pick it up... but... allaboutgeorge did a nice creative peice of work designing a musical context for such a long peice of poetry
[avatar]
oh, and thanks for the worm affirmation btw 😄
[avatar]
Melodica!? No way! I've been thinking about busting my melodica out since day 1 but couldn't be arsed until this point. I've clearly been doing it wrong if you can make it sound like that.
[avatar]
thanks for your comments!!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on "Verona Sunday!" Yes, the creaking sounds are the prepared valise. It's a fun instrument.
[avatar]
Solitude Standing is a superb record, thanks!
[avatar]
But who would have both a xylophone and a stylophone AND be crazy enough to combine their powers?!
[avatar]
Let me know if you got that song (and if you think it might work)
[avatar]
thank you so much for your comment on my song!! :')
[avatar]
Sent you a FB message... No pressure - no worries
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment. The idea was to make the cowbell part of a salsa piece that still needs to be found separately audible.
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your thoughtful comments on "Didn't Say Stay." I appreciated what you had to say about the lyrics that worked best for you.
[avatar]
Haha, thank you for humouring me!
[avatar]
ha @owl you got the Dylan in 'signpost' I was actually singing in my best Bob voice to channel what he would say and he wpould definiterly say 'the banker and the pope' :)
[avatar]
Hi Owl
Thanks for you beautiful comments.
Your voice is like honey dripping from a warm spoon - delicious!
[avatar]
Thanks for that comment! I feel duty bound to clarify that it was only the recording bit in that spare hour. Song had been written over the previous few evenings. (Ps. Where did your cat go? I miss your cat).
[avatar]
Great to see you! @owl It's been a while!
[avatar]
@clioem
So glad you are back btw!
[avatar]
Hey there! I’m sorry to hear about the last year being sad. I am definitely looking forward to hearing about it in your new songs this year. Have a wonderful FAWM and I’ll be listening.
[avatar]
Grazie mille! Sei troppo gentile! Non sapevo parlassi così bene l'italiano, complimenti! :-)
[avatar]
Heck no, I'm on the zombies side!!! (At least in this particular case, hahaha.) Thanks for the comment on my "collab" with A.I. and, yes, the driving metaphor and all the more colorful stuff about class war, eating the rich, and dinner being served on the stock exchange floor was me! I think A.I. is still quite loyal to its wealthy masters and just gave me generic lines about zombies fighting for the poor and oppressed! 😂
[avatar]
@tangle
Thank yooou! I found myself wanting to see that line lots, which is why I added one more indulgent chorus haha.
[avatar]
Heh, Az is a special wee guy. But I'm going to have manage FAWM around him Already recorded on vocal take with super loud purring on it!
[avatar]
@clioem
Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Happy FAWM, Owl!! Always enjoy your tunes :)
