Winter In My Bones

A friend of mine, a writer, had an idea that this year we would help inspire each creatively. I would write a song and he would write a short story inspired by it, then he would write a story and I would write a song based on it. We chose the theme of "winter."

In the meantime, my 8-year-old nephew Quill (who I don't get to see very often, because while his family is from the US, he is born and raised in The Netherlands) had asked me if he could contribute to one of my songs. He did some background yelling for me on a track a couple years ago and he LOVES my band, The Archivists.

So I decided to combine these things, and write a song about winter with Quill's help. I asked my brother to record Quill "just talking about winter, what he likes about it, how it makes him feel."

And this is the result.

Lyrics

I like that it's windy
Cold and dark
The crunch of ice under my boot
And the water freezes
The temperature drops
And the frigid air through my bones

This is such a fun idea, love getting others involved in the writing process! This sounds amazing, nailed the trance vibe.

Digging the self-recorded sampling method. It had some very unique results and elevated the song. Very catchy, even though it is just a sampled reading.

You know how sometimes when you hear something and you think "this would do well in a movie"? I kind of got this vibe from this. Horror movie, opening wide camera shot, panning up slowly throughout a long driveway. Spooky vibes, regardless if you intended that or not. I love the vocal delivery and the eerie and overall haunting feel of it!

Fun! Boards of Canada vibes but even more playful.

A vibe, though I can't say I agree with this child. Danceable downtempo groove. UNDER MY B O O O T S

Nice remixing of the spoken words. It is almost meditative. A little spooky and driving.

Great head-bopping laid-back groove, awesome sonic painting with Quill's vox. Very cool.

Very cool. Nice play with the sample voice and the music is a perfect complement. .

Listen, quit trying to make "Quill is the 3rd member of the band" happen, it's not going to happen, ok?!

Props to Quill this voice gives the song such an interesting dimension. Cool soundscapes. I think it would rather fall into trip hop.

Awesome idea and way to collaborate internationally right off the bat! I love all the pitch shifting of Quill's voice and the whole winter thing... I totally get it now that I've lived in Berlin for a few winters now!
