Data Driven Man (Snippet)

by @dasbinky

Liner Notes

One of my stupid and/or brilliant ideas this year is to write a series of Snippets. These are random ideas that pop up based on a word, or a phrase, or whatever. Stuff that is catchy and fun, but in no way warrants a full song. In this case, it maybe warrants 18 seconds, which is where it's at now. I'm hoping this helps burn through my lyrical backlog of stuff that needs a home.

This is the first Snippet. I heard someone use the phrase "I'm a data driven man" in a work meeting, which stood out in part because we were in a meeting about data warehouse design… presumably we're all fairly data driven. But also, what a weird flex. "I, a person in business, rely on data to make my decisions." Yes. We all do. It's a business. And you're a middle manager, you aren't deciding anything.

Anyway, this made me think of a sort-of blues tune. The kind of blues tune where people refer to each as cats. Because they're cool. Which is what this is. There's not much to add.

Incidentally, if this (or any eventual Snippets) make you think "No way! John's wrong! This needs to be longer than Bohemian Rhapsody!", have at it.

Lyrics

Well I'm a data driven man
I run my business with a data driven plan
And all you other cats relying on inferior data
Will soon know you're probably doing it wrong

short and sweet and engaging! great blast of straight-ahead tell it like it is!
no doublespeak here, its single speak all the way, baby!

music is ideal for this lyric, too, great fun!

Haaaaa, this is fantastic. I always get so annoyed by the vagueness and inaccuracy of corporate-speak, so this is cathartic for me :P

It took me longer to read your liner notes than to listen to the snippet. So I had to listen again. 😁 lots of fun. I’m liking this snippet thing

Thank you. This snippet totally describes my husband. I'm sending him the link.

Feels straight out of a BNL Album, brilliant!

What a delight. I love the idea of snippets, although I feel like this could be a whole song. Rock the servers & the data center (I don't know what I'm saying)

That made a statement, then left the building! Really cool tune... I want to hear MORE! Following...

It’s like a schoolhouse rock interstitial

Oh no this is much too catchy to be this short 😭
The whole concept of "data driven" anything, in particular in a workplace context, is so trite but you've made it super fun with those blues guitars.

Very Bachman-Turner-Overdrive groove. Fun vocals and theme!
[avatar]
You should develop this into a full song. Such a cool idea!

Haw! Fun. Am I hearing Beatles harmonies and George Harrison licks?

But of course. I found myself seguing into Neil Diamond's Solitary Man for some reason. Let me know if you would like some added lyrics.

Bit Zappaesque, I'm afraid. However, that fraud would have stretched the song unneccessarily to over 3 minutes.

I relate.
And consequently like these 18 seconds of music more than is healthy.
I do really like this idea of just getting the thought down into a DAW and out there as it is. I suffer terribly from the desire to only print complete songs. I'm sure it holds me back. So all power to you, you data driven person you!

Dammit, now I want the whole thing. I can also see this as a side character song in Office Space: The Musical

I am obsessed with this. It evoked such a vision in my minds' eye, I can see this dude in my head. What a jam.
