Liner Notes

This is (I think) my third attempt at writing a song about imposter syndrome. I haven't liked any of my previous goes. I suppose I'm just not very good at it (ho ho ho).

Now that I've recorded it and listened back, it's not obvious to me if the narrator feels like an imposter (which is what I had in mind) or whether they're genuinely incompetent and trying to hide it. I might tweak it, or I might just leave it like that.

Either way, it's a simple bit of #ukulele #folk, straight to laptop since I'm away with merely a uke and a laptop (and a notebook with scribbled ideas :)) until Monday. But I suppose sometimes that's all you need... #fuc

Lyrics

[G][D][G][C]
[G][D][D7]

[G]Walking past re[C]ception with
A [D]bold determined [G]stride
[G]Confident and [C]thoughtful
At [D]least on the out[G]side

[C]Saying our good [D]mornings
Settle [Em]down and make a [C]start
[G]Feel somebody's [C]watching
So [G]try to look the [D]part[D7]

And [G]if I [D]don't get [C]rumbled [Em]I will
[G]Still co[Em]llect my [C]pay
So per[G]haps I'll [D]get a[G]way with [C]it
For [G]one [D]more [G]day

[G][D][G][C]
[G][D][D7]

[G]Reeling off the [C]jargon
Like it [D]was their native [G]tongue
[G]Sharpening their [C]pencils
To tick [D]off todos now [G]done

While I [C]act like I be[D]long here
And put [Em]on the proper [C]show
But [G]please don't ask me [C]anything
That [G]I'm not going to [D]know[D7]

[G]If I [D]don't get [C]rumbled [Em]I will
[G]Still co[Em]llect my [C]pay
Per[G]haps I'll [D]get a[G]way with [C]it
For [G]one [D]more [G]day

They [D]must be keeping [G]score
[D]Counting up the [G]flaws
[C]I'll keep on [G]strumming
Though you've [C]heard this one [D]before[D7]

And [G]even [D]while I'm [C]churning [Em]out
The [G]same old [Em]tired [C]rhymes
Per[G]haps I'll [D]get a[G]way with [C]it
[G]One [D]more [G]time

[G][D][G][C]
[G][D][D7]

[G]If I [D]don't get [C]rumbled [Em]I will
[G]Still co[Em]llect my [C]pay
Per[G]haps I'll [D]get a[G]way with [C]it
For [G]one [D]more [G]day

Per[G]haps I'll [D]get a[G]way with [C]it
For [G]one [D]more [G]day

Thematically, this feels so familiar (painfully so). We should have an Impostor Syndrome theme circle sometime; I have two or three songs I could bring to the party. "Perhaps I'll get away with it/One more day" - ouch, but so true for so many of us.

Musically, I like your chord progression, and your melody works well with it. As always, good, solid vocals and good, solid uke playing. There's nothing I don't like, musically speaking.

I would say untrained rather than incompetent - and that means someone else is the real imposter. But I sure have felt like that. Well done.

I like the song, especially the "must be keeping score Counting up the flaws" bit. I know the feeling of expecting someone to say, "OK, let's get serious. This joke has gone on long enough."

(My personal version of imposter syndrome has always been more about adulthood than work, but anyway....)

Highly relatable. I remember being called in to an office room by two managers and knew I was going to fired. I was promoted.

Great fun. I like the ambiguity; I'd leave it as it is. "Perhaps I'll get away with it for one more day" is a great hook, too.

ha ha - this is the song i thought many of those up the food chain from me should have been singing - it's a real good write

"Unnecessarily relatable lyrics" about sums it up, thanks @marilisa . But yeah, I like the little melodic run up on "get away with it", it seems like a musical shrug, which may or may not be what you intended - but take the compliment that it's clever? 😜

Perhaps you are an imposter of imposter songs! I think you got it pretty right here! One of my old age pleasures is I don’t care anymore. Nice start up! Take ya money anyway as you say!

Very relatable and highly amusing...

This is very relatable! It's fun that it's such a not-happy topic set to such happy sounding music. Great stuff!

Nice write! The turn from Cubicle-land to FAWM in the last verse works particularly well.

I feel this in my very bones. Somehow I've got to nearly 45 and no one has noticed yet. Or maybe they have and they're just being polite. Oh no.

(Beyond which - lovely melody to this, in addition to the unnecessarily relatable lyrics.)

Great job! Made me smile! Love the lyrics!
