Pale Reflection

Liner Notes

As a white male, there's, y'know, stuff. It's complicated. Mostly, though, it's complicated for folks who aren't those things (white, male.)

As a spiritual person I believe the solution will come in my lifetime, right here on earth, but that's a longer conversation for a more personal venue. Here, this is about the frustration of watching the world burn for the past 65 years.

Lyrics

I grew up way up in the north
couple hours south of Duluth
all winter long it's really white
and spring, summer, and fall, to tell the truth

left the frozen north for San Diego
met folks who didn't look like me
some were dark and some were darker
and some from west of the South China Sea

my folks taught us that people are just people
whether they look like me or not
so I treated everyone like they were me
which was only right, or so I thought

turns out that equal don't mean fair
if you look like me the wheels have been greased
and thinking stuff about the goose and gander
isn't enough, to say the least

I could say it wasn't me, I wasn't born
I never would have ever done those things
but folks I love get treated like they shouldn't
by outrageous fortune's arrows and slings

took most of life for me to realize
I was gifted a place I didn't earn
and I want to fix it all and make it better
but I don't believe most folks will ever learn

Enjoying listening to the internal chord motions in these string lines.

"but I don't believe most folks will ever learn" is a striking way to wrap it.

This is really nice, your gentle lilting voice along with the orchestration goes really well. I've just comes back from a Pilates session, I'm all relaxed, and this was the perfect listen 👍

I enjoyed the reflection you shared. The orchestration is beautiful. Born, raised and living in Winnipeg, I can relate to white winters.

What a lovely song. I empathize with the sentiment and the last verse in particular says a lot. The melancholic vibe and strings synth are a fitting accompaniment for the lyric. Heartfelt singing too.
