Warming Up

Liner Notes

Ok, Thanks for listening! I'm listening too. First impression is "Sounds decent - the cello records well - this is good news!"

The studio setup here has not been very operator friendly for many years - and it seems that each year, things are unconsciously reorganised to make it more difficult to operate comfortably (pc screen is on a high shelf - bad for the neck), keyboard balancing on a speaker (bad for lower back), mouse on a book on a different speaker (bad for shoulders). Over the last year, the studio was also filled with speakers, and so now, especially, you have to be contorted to even just hit record. That said, everything is kinda plugged in, but nothing is convenient - sometimes I think "just the way it should be (#life-is-suffering)", but why not work on having a more accessible DAW - a pleasure to edit/record is a good idea. Will try to achieve such utopian ideals.

Add to this - for Christmas, we managed to find a cello, and have been learning it. Managing a cello/bow while trying to do anything else introduces many new edge-cases - always the danger of damage. This year will probably be a cello year #danger-music.

Just seeing if things work, #freeform #instrumental - no mastering or compression - just raw mix of the recorded tracks (2 #cello, 1 #drums, 1 #bass, 1 #nylon-string-guitar) - it will be nice to get to a point where we can record without any editing (the dream), so trying that avenue. sorry lots of #clipping on the drum track (#such-is-life).

I love the atmosphere of this one and how the loose start gradually comes into more focus and then towards the end, slips out of focus once again. Very clever stuff!

ngl, your studio sounds exactly as I had imagined it would. You've created a really nice soundscape here, delighted to find you've added a cello to your arsenal and already getting a great sound out of it. This sort of reminds me of some of the respite you often get in GY!BE records before all hell breaks loose

Somehow this has a bit of a dark and eerie vibe to it. Love it. Like how "improvisational" it sounds, that adds to the uneasy feeling it gives. It fels a bit messy and unpolished, which really helps setting the mood. To me it's very much a successful song.

When hearing this, I can imagine wading through a swamp in a very hot and humid place, and there are insects everywhere and not knowing what's gonna happen.

Looks like you're in a challenging recording environment! My own "home studio" is not great either, so I can maybe relate to a few things...
Anyway, I enjoy what I'm hearing -- very much. The cello sounds great -- well everything sounds great, but the cello is adding mystical vibes to the piece. And I like that's it's raw. Organic. Free, and therefore quite soothing, as I feel carried away.
Thanks for sharing!

Lovely live sound, who needs compression and mastering? The cello and bass sound so good together.

Seems like everything works. Good effort on learning the cello. I imagine it can’t be easy.

This is really pretty! Very flowy but also unexpected. Nice!
