Lyrics

Karen Carpenter carved herself away
What little woman was left of her
She whittled all away

The kindness she shared
She never saved for herself
Her own dreams were left
Dusting on that closet shelf

Karen Carpenter carved herself away
What little woman was left of her
She whittled all away

When we keep what we love
pinned down to the page
It’s no wonder that they never
Seem to act their age

Karen Carpenter carved herself away
What little woman was left of her
She whittled all away

When your light and likeness
Are just packaged to be sold
It's a heavy, heavy weight
No wonder she wanted a lighter load

I always loved Karen, she had the voice of an angel and in the end all she really wanted to do was drum. Her voice was a curse and a blessing. Beautiful track.

Such a sad story. Great treatment, makes me think about how much I loved her music, and what a tragedy it all was. "carved herself away" - very apt and sad.

I am not familiar whit Karen but this is certainly a heavy song to listen to. What a tragic tale. Your voice is like velvet and suits this sort of story telling. A powerful listen.

I think about the tragedy of her death fairly frequently, so these lyrics really touched me. The melodic dip and leap on the verse is lovely. Really sensitive, sweet treatment of a "heavy, heavy weight."

This should be included in the director cut of Todd Hayne's "Superstar" film, would float nicely over the closing credits. Agree with other comments, you captured a lot in a concise song.

What a beautiful guitar part and sound right from the start!

A tragic story that I never knew about until this song, sensitively told.
