Welcome to the World

Liner Notes

I sat on this song for a while, half-baked, for about two years. I'd occasionally pick it up, try to finish it, give up, and decide it was bad, then shelve it once again. I decided to just finish it no matter how it turned out. It's still a bit rough in parts but overall I'm glad I finished it.

The song itself came about right around when my first child was born. I revisited it and finished it after my second child was born. I wanted to write a song with the sentiment "Life is tough, but I and others will love you. You are not in this alone". I often feel helpless in an increasingly uncertain world with bouts of depression so I wanted to acknowledge that feeling while also conveying there is hope and beauty out there.

Lyrics

The scars you get
Are here to stay
All your thoughts
Just float away

Carry on just the same
It’ll be ok

Welcome to the world
we’re here with you
It’s ok to be a bit confused

It’s not your fault it’s over
All you can do is hold her
I’ll hold you just the same

Don’t carry it on your shoulders
Shrug off that heavy boulder
Let it all roll away
Roll away

Take it from me
Don’t be too late
Take your time
But don’t hesitate

Open up to change
It’ll be ok

Welcome to the world
we’re here with you
It’s ok to be a bit confused

Chorus 2
Look in the past but don’t stare
Find friends who love and still care
Say goodbye when they go

Follow the light within you
Somedays you’ll have to get through
Starting right where you end
And try again

The scars you get
Along the way
mean to say
that you were brave

Nice message in the tender lyrics and a sweet melancholic melody. Congratulations on getting around to finishing it.

I’m a sucker for a guitar / vocal pairing. Lovely tune. Your voice is really nice. I’m getting slight Velvet Underground / Jonathan Richman vibes from this, which is a good thing.
