A song about a statue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equestrian_statue_of_the_Duke_of_Wellington,_Glasgow

Since at least the 1980s the statue of the Duke of Wellington in Glasgow has had a traffic cone on the top of its head. I saw a traffic cone by the side of the road on my way to work yesterday and was reminded of this obscure fact. So here's a #ukulele #folk song about it, that might not make any sense. But it's February, so it happens. #fuc

Lyrics

[G][C]
[Em][D][G]

[G]Just round the corner from [C]Queen Street
[D]Into the Royal Exchange [Em]Square
[C]Honouring one of our [G]heroes
You'll [C]find his monument [D]there

[G]Proudly surveying the [C]city
On a [D]pedestal, sculpted in [Em]bronze
[C]Mounting his horse Copen[G]hagen
He [C]looks to the Clyde and be[D]yond

[C]Statesmanlike, [D]tall and im[G]posing
No [Em]wonder Na[C]poleon [D]fled[D7][D6][D]
When he [G]saw the com[D]mander app[Em]roaching
With a [C]cone on the [D]top of his [G]head

[G][C]
[Em][D][G]

We [G]celebrate Wellington's [C]service
[D]In finally ending the [Em]wars
His [C]less than conventional [G]tactics
Had his [C]enemy's back to the [D]wall

He de[C]feated Na[D]poleon's [G]Army
But no [Em]wonder he [C]ended up [D]dead[D7][D6][D]
After [G]leading his [D]troops into [Em]battle
With a [C]cone on the [D]top of his [G]head

[G][C]
[D][Em]
[C][G]
[C][D]

So the [G]people of Glasgow en[C]deavour
To [D]keep the duke looking his [Em]best
And [C]ensure the equestrian [G]statue
[C]Forever is properly [D]dressed

[C]Gazing from [D]high up a[G]bove them
He [Em]filled his op[C]ponents with [D]dread[D7][D6][D]
With a [G]pigeon perched [D]on his left [Em]elbow
And a [C]cone on the [D]top of his [G]head

Delightfully whimsical! The whole tradition is fun of course, but you bring something special with your happy strumming and somehow-both-deadpan-and-wry vocals!

Scott in Edinburgh is the same! It seems to be a thing in Scotland! We found it amusing, so this was spot on for us! Nice!

I love this! I've seen pictures of said cone-head statue, and I can't wait to make it to Glasgow some day to see it in person. This has a classic folk song quality to it, mixed with a sensibility that reminds me of Half Man Half Biscuit (or a bit of Divine Comedy). So enjoyable!
