Liner Notes

Another Saturday morning vignette. Thankful this is not my current personal experience, but sometimes I think we wait for permission to go. Love your people, and let them know it repeatedly and often.

Lyrics

you've done your work
you've served your time
you can be done with this whole world and still be mine

there is no rush
I know somehow
it is enough the way you sleep beside me now

when you're ready
we'll go gently together
we'll go gently together
we'll go home

what is a ghost
but holding on
lingering when it's time to be done

what is love
but a chaperone
I can't go with you but you do not go alone

when you're ready
we'll go gently together
we'll go gently together
we'll go home

Catching up on my listens/comments... many thanks for yours on mine the other day.

Oh wow... fabulous song. Sounds like we're moved by the same sort of stuff. LOVED IT.

What a sad, loving, beautiful song.

What this has above all is warmth: of your voice, your guitar (with that resonant low D), and the warm embrace of the words as the singer lets go and gives permission to let go. The 'What is love ... chaperone ... not alone' section is a little gem.

I would not have thought it possible for your voice to improve, but there's a depth and resonance I don't remember from, oh, 20 years ago . . . this is beautiful.

Oh boy, it’s often the simplest things that have the most weight and the capability to touch the emotions more. That’s certainly the case here

Gorgeous choice of that drop D tuning. You set the mood from that very first chord. And that delicately hooky chorus - chef’s kiss. Also love the chaperone lyric.

What a nice song! Both the lyrics and the presentation are most pleasing

This is wonderful, Phil. Perfect little song.

Oh man, you need to put a health warning on the liner notes, I wasn't emotionally prepared for what I've just listened to. I'm very rarely reduced to tears, but I'm fairly close right now. Heavy stuff. But beautifully expressed. 'What is love but a chaperone'. Amazing line. Sensational work, Phil.

Good lord this is stunningly amazing.
Just... *sigh* everything about it. Your voice, the lyrics, the production quality, your guitar sounds beautiful, arrangement. It's all quite amazing.

And it made me cry.

Hauntingly beautiful. So sparse, you have a lovingly raw way of phrasing your words. Captivating.

This is a bandaid. Perfectly paced, perfectly spaced. There is a vulnerability in your voice, that I wouldn’t know this wasn’t a recent lived experience. The vocal delivery is pristine and the accompaniment is just enough

Love the idea of a loved one close by and a gentle homecoming ❣️as always your chord choices, and vocal warmth move me.

A quiet, moving, lovely song.

Gorgeous. The guitar and your voice sound so rich and full. Love the sparse feel.

A profoundly beautiful song, from the deep opening chord to the last, patient waiting for the guitar wood to stop vibrating. An instant classic.
