This one is for my trans friends, my disabled friends, my Black and Indigenous friends and friends who are people of color, and my friends who are women. People whose daily existence is a fight just to survive, let alone stay hopeful for a better future. It's usually these people who have the most compelling sense of justice, who fight the hardest not just for ourselves, but for anyone else who is oppressed.

If you've been fighting, if you're exhausted and overwhelmed, this is your official permission slip to take a breath, take a nap, and rest. The battle will be here when you get back, and so will the resistance. Community care is the only way we are getting through this.

Lyrics

Oh, oh
Something in the water, Something in the air
You were always softer and life was never fair
Oh, oh
You’ve been swimming circles, always on the run
When’s it gonna come around, when can you be done

Baby, lay your head on down

You’ve lost so much of yourself infighting
Baby, you can ask for help in finding
Something good to keep you holding on
You will come back to yourself
You will come back to yourself, oh

Water in the desert, an island in the sea
You’ve had to be so clever to make it to me

Darling, lay your burdens down

You’ve lost so much of yourself infighting
Baby, you can ask for help in finding
Something good to keep you holding on
You will come back to yourself
You will come back to yourself, oh

You can fall asleep, it’s safe in my arms
The battle is a marathon, of constant alarm
Someone else can take your place on the front line
We will take turns protecting you from harm

Baby, lay your head on down

You’ve lost so much of yourself infighting
Baby, you can ask for help in finding
Something good to keep you holding on
You will come back to yourself
You will come back to yourself, oh

Beautiful message. We do not talk enough of what we call "burn out militant" in french (i don't now how to call it in english). I like the idea of taking turns and how you put it in a song.

Such an important message right now, key to have alongside the calls to action, which are also important. And the song is beautiful.

These lyrics (and the musical setting for them) are a balm. Really gorgeous work. This is a message we do all need right now. The bridge is particularly gorgeous, it's reminding me of the image of a choir, where we all take turns breathing on the long-held notes so we can sustain ourselves and each other. Just lovely!
