I have been sitting on this song since day 1! I did a practice run of the first verse, and for whatever reason, the audio of the partial demo sounds SO much better than any recordings I've made of the whole thing. But I gotta not let perfect be the enemy of good enough, so here is the best I could put together for now.

This song is about an interaction I had with someone I went to high school with back in 2016. At the time, the interaction baffled me. But now that it's come back around again, I feel in some ways similar to her. "It doesn't change my mission."

The full names of the elders that I reference in it are:
Ammon Hennacy
Lucy Parsons
Huey Newton

I do not invoke anyones' names uncritically. Elders teach us from their errors as well as their strengths.

Lyrics

annie, you're just like me
i didn't see it at the time, cuz your resolve came from christ
and mine ammon

the first time the fascists won,
your eyes and countenance like ashen stone,
with the old cold steady earth breath from within
you said "this doesn't change my mission"

annie, you're just like me
i didn't see it at the time, cuz your resolve came from christ
and mine lucy

the second time the fascists won,
my eyes and countenance unrelenting sun,
ready to burn what he's taken to the ground
we would've had to burn it anyhow

annie, you're just like me
i didn't see it at the time, cuz your resolve came from christ
and mine huey

This one is pretty hot! I can definitely imagine it getting loud and chaotic with a full band bashing away. It's great as it is, though. I love the perspective you've gained with a little remove from your younger self. Lots of great lines packed into a short piece. I'm going to be pondering the "ready to burn" verse for a little bit

Great mando! Such a cool song! I really like the drone thing. Happy I stopped in to listen.

This is really nicely done! The mandolin is haunting.

Yes! I love this.it sounds so full with just the two instruments and your voice. It sounds medieval and dark and yet protesty and getting "we the heathens" vibes. So so good!

This is FANTASTIC!!! I love the music and the dynamics of it! Your vocals are strong and carry this to the winds! I am a huge Jethro Tull fan and this reminds me so much of their best acoustic work! Just a magnificent song!!! Great work!

Oh I like that low synth with the bright mandolin. That is some wonderful mandolin playing and very nice layering. Great melody and vocals. Great production too, and the outro sounded great. I really enjoyed listening to your song and I am glad you let it go so we can enjoy it!
