Liner Notes

Why do we have blind spots for our own actions that we would never tolerate in or for others?

I'm trying to hold myself to the songwriting and just do simple demos, so you'll have to use your rock and roll imagination.

Lyrics

I remember when the time was
I didn't flinch when you made my phone buzz
just another Saturday night
that man never gonna treat you right

You won't believe what he did this time
bet I would because you've been crying
I don't know why you still think he might
that man never gonna treat you right

he's gonna roll over you as long as you play dead
I've got no advice that I have not already said
neither of you know when you've had enough
I don't know what that is but it ain't love

I don't think that you would let me
ever be treated so badly
then every time he does it you act surprised
that man never gonna treat you right

I know you know you can't change him
so why do the same damn thing again
it's your one wild precious life
that man never gonna treat you right

This is so raw, and fits so well with the subject. Lovely playing and so much emotion in your voice.

My rock and roll imagination is giving this a slightly fuzzed-up swampy electric and a foot stomp beat. There's a friend of a friend I should probably play this to. They'd miss the message completely, but at least they'd have heard a good song.

I've lived on both sides of this lyric. Great insight and you made it rhyme.

Doesn’t really need a big production, Phil 😀 Your vocal gets everything across by itself, and there’s something that ties into the tough love, telling it how it is message of the song that suits a stripped back approach. I suspect there are a tonne of pro songwriters in Nashville who’d give their back teeth to write a song this relatable and strong. Top work.

Superb. Love the phrasing on ‘crying’, lovely touch. I think this works really well as a simple acoustic ‘production’. It keeps the emotion at the forefront I think. It’s a great take and performance.

Ooof. This one hits pretty hard.
Amazing songwriting Phil. Dang.
It's concise and there's brevity yet you've giving enough info for the listener to fill in the rest of the storyline. It's vague enough that we can fill in with our experience instead of you inserting details. This is amazing.

I love the sound of your guitar for this song also. I'm afraid now that I've heard it like this I can't imagine a full band accompanying.

So well done.

Love these lyrics-the chorus is especially powerful. I can hear a full band behind this! Good job!!!
