Juliet's Slumber (Soulmate in a Coma)

by @danxduran

Liner Notes

Another chapter in the concept album. I should really nail down the plot, but it's honestly quite confusing to explain, so I won't!

Anyway, this one came out of a nice chord progression I had which seemed to work well finger-picked - but my finger-picking is second in its ineptitude only to my palm-muting, so I resorted to programming it using Kontakt.

The mix is a bit messy - just getting those ideas down, can strip it back a bit later.

Drums: VProm (Linndrum clone), Superior Drummer 3
Bass: Epiphone violin bass through Tonex
Guitar: Kontakt Electric Sunburst library
Synths: Kontakt Modular Icons/Melted Vibes, Solina Strings, Odyssey
Vocals: Includes Ovox vocoder

All run through the usual computer-melting array of saturations, tapes, compressors, eg Waves Curves Equator, Ampex, TG12345, 1176, optical.

Lyrics

been a dozen years in her head
just a couple of weeks in mine
just a flick of the wrist to pull the plug

my soulmate in a coma
decay like a carcinoma
university a waste of time? maybe i should go

get a doctorate in medicine
make a vaccine for those locked-in
get published in Nature, and cure juliet's slumber

but if i die before her, let her know that i loved her
but if i die before her, let her know that i loved her

I've got no idea what's going on in the context of the album but I bloody enjoyed this track. It rocks on very nicely over that carefully layered rhythm track. Like the harmonizer on the vocals, and those squelchy little synth parts are ace too.

This is great. I love the vibe and tone. I wish I could get my linndrum to sound like this. I'm always a sucker for clean/semiclean arpeggiated guitar.

I obviously may not fully comprehend the plot of what's going on here, but that in no way detracts from how rocking and grandiose this track is. There's a heavy radio-friendly old college alternative feel here that is really involving, like a hazy portal into a murky but fascinating world.

Absolutely love that picked chord progression. This may be my favourite of your songs this year. This track is epic
