I am a 30 something singer songwriter from Cardiff, UK.

My influences include but are not limited to: Manic Street Preachers, Oasis, Bruce Springsteen, U2, Ghost, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Porcupine Tree, Chevelle, Biffy Clyro, Bleachers, Green Day, Guns n’ Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Jimmy Eat World, Neil Young, Ryan Adams, Queens of the Stone Age, Sam Fender, Smashing Pumpkins, Stereophonics, Stone Temple Pilots, Led Zeppelin, Therapy?, Tool, Turin Brakes and many more.

Last year I recorded and released 4 albums. Two ‘Solo’ albums under my given name ‘Matthew Dunn’ and two under my pseudonym ‘Zodiac 68’.

My latest release was the album ‘Anonymous’

It’s been a tough 12 months since last years FAWM. After a lot of tests I was diagnosed with Ménière’s Disease which has caused me pretty severe hearing loss in my right ear. I had a hearing aid for the first time so it’s been a lot of adjusting to continue my love of music. Luckily things seems to be going in the right direction and I’m excited to see what I can come up with this year.

The plan is to write what comes naturally this year. I’m not aiming for a ‘grunge’ album or ‘Americana’ album like I did last year. I’m going to trust my instincts and not second guess myself too much.

To speed things up I’m going to be using lyrics that have been kindly donated by my brother (A much better lyricist than me). Due to an impending holiday I’m only here til 20th Feb so I need to be very efficient to get to the 14 tracks. But I am confident. Let’s do this!!!

Hey Matt, look at you with your 2.5 FAWMs' worth of new songs! Great stuff! If you are still around, I wanted to let you know that @ampersandman and I are hard at work on our album release and I wondered if you'd like to be kept apprised of our launch. You were basically president of our fan club over here - thanks for all the love! Shoot me an email if you'd like to stay in touch.
[avatar]
Hey thanks for the mention in the review thread! I loved your double album and I’m looking forward to going back and listening to the songs I didn’t get to. Congrats on the win!
[avatar]
Matt, I hope you’re having a great holiday. I thoroughly enjoyed your work. Great job!
[avatar]
hi mate , enjoyed your songs lots this Fawm - i would love to play some on my podcast Songwriters and original songs - if you want send me some links at coolparadeeso@gmail.com
[avatar]
Have a blast mate.
[avatar]
Thanks, I'll have to check those out. I always double track my vocals as well, but it's to hide my voice as best as I can. 😀
[avatar]
Your guitars sound good too. I mean, your whole setup does. I really like how you record and process your voice. That's the area I need to improve in the most.
[avatar]
Hey Matt. I run my guitars (and bass) through a Line6 PODxt that I've had for a long time. I know alot of folks have made the jump over to amp sims through the DAW, but I can't bring myself to do it.
[avatar]
@reklov
Oh, so THIS is NOT your holiday? I'm surprised!
[avatar]
Congrats on your early WIN!!! Keep writing!
[avatar]
recorded in a wardrobe on my iphone - why did i even spend so much on my aston mic back home?! hahahaha thanks for commenting pal. i think this one might be promoted to the album im currently working on.
[avatar]
Tell your wife I said hi 😂 she might be wondering what's with all the love messages
[avatar]
I certainly understand the neglecting family part! 😀
My goal for this year was to get to where I could make songs quickly with templates and presets, so I definitely understand.
And thank you for listening to my stuff too. I love that FAWM introduces me to so many fresh and awesome artists
[avatar]
Jeez, the amp emulations are crazy now, right? I still can’t get over how big they sound - although that has a lot to do with your skill in mixing them too :)
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to "The Truth is Out There," so happy another X-Files fan enjoyed it! (I wasn't happy with the original demo, so I also just posted a new version with a different vocal.)
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out "Glimpse" so glad you liked it!
[avatar]
Glad you liked my satirical song "String 'em up!". It's funny, I'd never have thought that was my best song. I suppose because I have written so many satirical songs over the years that they are sort of second nature to me.

@nadine
Thanks for your comments! I'm happy to read you enjoyed the updates and our new song. Being compared to Iron Maiden is great, thanks!

@nadine
Hey Matt, we added some vocals to the demo of "Pay It Forward". Feel free to check. Not final yet.
[avatar]
Glad you liked my latest opus (Portrait of the Artist). I was quite pleased with myself getting all the words in the Lyric Cloud in to the tale.
[avatar]
Wow, thanks for the sweet recommendation and comments on Ride It Out, I'm just touched beyond words.
[avatar]
Thanks, I know you said a "Beatles melody" but there was actually a few words taken from 'I Am The Walrus' and then a reference at the end. Maybe I should put that in quotes. Thanks for the comment and I saw you followed my SoundCloud. Thanks Matt!
[avatar]
@brisk
Ha ha, thanks for listening - Black Sabbath and Oasis combined - now that's weird... it's weird because it's a combination that actually isn't as crazy as it sounds at first - is there a band that does that? A kind of rock'n'roll third way?!
[avatar]
Thanks again for your kind words, so glad you liked the song Get Better. Really appreciate you listening 🙂 How many more songs do you think you're going to knock out this month?
[avatar]
@nadine
Blimey you've been a bit earlier for that recommendation thread! Great pick!
[avatar]
Matt, thank you so much for your kind words and the recommendation! I'm humbled.
[avatar]
@nadine
Yes, sometimes a little break can help. I've been quite exhausted after 50/90, but I didn't manage to take a break. I just rejected collabs and stopped writing songs, but I had enough music to be busy with mixing nearly every day. And I'm still not done yet xD I'm trying to slow down my pace a bit.

I'm pretty sure you return with a bunch of new ideas for new songs when you're back from holiday!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks for your comment! I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed my interpretation of "Paying it forward". Congrats for winning FAWM. That's been really quick this year!
[avatar]
Glad you liked "I am Sent" I was going for a late 50s early 60s vibe. From your comment I reckon I have achieved it. 😁
[avatar]
You've.....you've already got 14!? Congrats! But...how!? I need to up my game.

Thanks for your kind words on my song, glad you enjoyed listening. Hope the rest of your FAWM is equally as productive as your first week 😄
[avatar]
Thank you so much for listening and your kind words!
[avatar]
Thanks for commenting on my Stranger things homage - i spent last week re watching season 4 in my hotel room so you can see how this track ended up like it did! proper weird for me doing this kind of music though!
[avatar]
@brisk
Yay, a fellow Here Is No Why fan! I don't know what it is about that song. For someone who usually demands a big chorus from a song like that, it is weirdly chorus free - or at least, the chorus doesn't really obey normal stadium rock chorus principles. But it has been going round in my head for repeat for decades.

Thanks for your very kind comment on Sing To Me - I wish I had actual guitar powers. I'm so limited that really I can only do certain things well enough to record. I'm sure before the month is up I will do some kind of drop-d riffer, of the slow to mid tempo variety...
[avatar]
YOU SAID: "You astound me with your storytelling lyrics."
Ah that's because really I am a frustrated novelist and scriptwriter. 😉
[avatar]
@tezzin
Thanks for the great note on "If I Dare Seek". I've just been going through your rather impressive output. So far my favorites are "I Wish It Was Me", "Unfaithful", and "Fishermen of Rhossili". Terrific stuff all the way 'round! And your brother really does have quite a way with words.
[avatar]
BBC symphony orchestra is quite brilliant, you’ll love it. The Horns A4 really adds great drama. I think the second chorus in Gaze into the Fire has these
[avatar]
Hey man, thanks for your kind comment about my vocal treatment. Melodyne is a very useful tool.
[avatar]
@reklov
Very hard-working, man! :-) I'm really impressed!
This year I'm very lazy and a bit half-hearted. Too much other things going on...
[avatar]
@tomski
Thank you so much for your lovely comments on my track At First The Sea Was Calm… you really helped put a smile on my face. I was very nervous about moving into this genre but comments like yours really help with my confidence. Have a fantastic FAWM!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks a lot for your comment on "High Noon". I haven't watched "Young Guns", but I listened to some soundtracks. Yes, you're right about the sentiment. Your comment help me to decide about the future of this song. Guess it will remain instrumental.
[avatar]
Hey Matt. Thanks for the comment and the reccomendation pal!! I’m glad to be off the mark this year! I’m all checked into my hotel again for the week, but I have some garageband tinkering to keep creativity flowing!!
[avatar]
Glad you liked my hippy reminiscing song. I am pleased that you find my voice so soothing. Not sure my wife would agree 😉
[avatar]
Thank you so much for putting me in the recommended thread!
[avatar]
@dutch
Thanks for listening to HOME
[avatar]
Wales came alive after the break, a bollocking from Gatland no doubt, but I think Ireland's quality eventually wore them down. I cant complain though, massive win and bonus point. Bring on the French.

And the Jocks beat England too, happy days.

I'm (Rebecca) was born in Carmarthen and spent most of my childhood and early adulthood in Aberystwyth ❤️

@mattwdunn good answer :) once again spoken like a true FAWMer.
I'd like to hear our female singer delivering 'Fishermen'. In other news you've written 10 songs?! steady on :) .... I just read your bio and see that you're in a hurry - good work, handy to have some lyrics ready too.. I have dug out a big sheaf of lyrics by my friend @alain_the_chef as I too have a busy Feb and being able to get to work on a song with some words already in place is a boon. Later in the month I'll try to do it the hard way.
[avatar]
Awesome @mattwdunn. I'll have to check out that Chris Lord Alge plug-in. I've seen that one, but haven't played with it yet. Thanks!
[avatar]
Thanks for your lovely response to I Love You. It felt good to me as I was working on it, but it's even more rewarding when it evokes something in a listener.
[avatar]
Supporting each other it what it is all about! Will be commenting more moving forward. Life just keeps getting in the way! 🤣
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on my Super Hero song. Yes, I used to be a semi-pro folkie, so you hit the genre perfectly. However, but thankfully I am not just a one trick pony 😋
[avatar]
To be fair Monster is from 50/90, you are pretty prolific yourself.
[avatar]
@reklov
Thanks a lot for commenting on my "Rotes Flugzeug".
I wish you a pleasant weekend!
[avatar]
BBC Symphony Orchestra from Spitfire, there is a free version I believe and they are great sounding orchestra parts
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your comment on my song! Made my day that you heard Green Day in it, they were one of my favorite bands as a kid
[avatar]
That's a great one, their live version of Looks Like Chaplin that they performed at Cardiff blew me away.
[avatar]
Thanks for checking out my songs. I saw you're from Cardiff, Stereophonics is one of my top bands!
[avatar]
@nadine
Well you could ask him if he's alright, but I know plenty of people who are happy or contented with their lifes and love super heavy and cringey stuff!
[avatar]
@tangle
Thanks for your kind feedback. Super cool that you're singing your brothers lyrics this year!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks a lot! Who knows, maybe I'm a better screamer than a singer?! I found that demonic voice last FAWM and play around. And yes, the harpsichord is designed to stay in your head all day 😈
[avatar]
@brisk
To be honest I think the first album works best when they're slavishly imitating Siamese Dream style rockers with massive dynamic cliffs and plateus (Tangerine? Is that as good as I remember it? Cement?) - but there are a couple of more gentle, even numbers I think, that this put me in mind of. Ace work though.
[avatar]
@slusk
I know - it’s almost 14 hours here - but local time irrelevant. According to some rules stated somewhere it was 12 CET, I think. Not that anyone cares. Just trying to live my Fool on the Hill persona. 😎😜 Nice song anyway.
[avatar]
Welcome back Matt! Looking forward to hearing your music :)
[avatar]
Hi Matt,
Thanks for the welcome back. I look forward to seeing what you come up with this year too. I am always astounded by the professional quality of your recordings and I love your rock orientated approach.
[avatar]
Cheers Matt! Looking forward to hearing what you (v speedily!) come up with. Love that list of influences 😍
[avatar]
You're welcome, and thank you! Just before an adventure is an exciting time, right?
[avatar]
Hi from Aberystwyth, Matt! Love your music on bandcamp, looking forward to hearing what you create this month!
[avatar]
What a pleasant discovery you are.
[avatar]
Hey I just listened to Everyone Who Saw You Run and enjoyed it quite a lot! Really lovely song and smashing performance!!!
[avatar]
Thanks for your kind words about No One Knows Their Names! I have watchlisted you as well!! Happy FAWMing!
[avatar]
Welcome Matt, have a great one
[avatar]
I'm listening to Anonymous right now and it's super good!! Really love how much detail goes into these instrumentals, and loved the riffs (especially the one on the verses of Someone Else's Eye)
[avatar]
Hey Matt! Looking forward to hearing yours as well, happy FAWM!!!
[avatar]
Hey Matt - loved your stuff last year. Can’t wait to hear what you put out this year!
[avatar]
@nadine
You're welcome, Matt. Everybody's talking about Spoti** , so I prefer to spend my money to those who deserve and make sure they get it! Your album has been great :) Happy FAWM!
