le chauffeur (the driver)

by @ambroise · @rowanb

Liner Notes

Ambroise :
I heard in the netherlands kids usually use bikes to drive to school or extracurricular activities when in most developed countries their parents have to drive them there (

). I’d love to seen that happens in my town, but i’d still be nostalgic of this strange time spend with my kids even if it can’t even look at them.
I can’t decide if this song is un dorian or un ionian mode (or both, one after the other) so I’m gonna claim it’s both for mode challenge ! :P

I recorded it with a dull programmed drum, but I felt like it needed something warmer. @rowanb agreed to play bodhrán and spoons on it and it sounds amasingly better.

Lyrics

(lyrics in english below)

agen’administratif, animateur vacance…

Amus’-toi bien trésor, prend ton sac on arrive

You gotta get out of town, but at that time of day, you'll be fine
Watch out for the speed camera in Canal Street
Slalom roundabouts between supermarkets
And continue straight on the national road
I prefer it now than at your last club
Amidst the one-way streets blurring the city centre
Doing laps around the block, stressing full blast
Finding somewhere to park - and not double-parked.

How many parents are we, on the road every night
Despite the weather, driving our kids
Summer under the sun, winter in the dark
So they can do their sport, their music, their drawing?
I've been a teacher, a nurse, a diplomat,
administrative officer, holiday leader...
Being a parent is rich, you pick up skills
And now I'm a chauffeur even if I'm not having the time of my life

Maybe tomorrow petrol will no longer exist
And we'll adapt the roads for the bike
Children will cycle alone and unsupervised
And parents will stay home for the aperitif

(musical bridge)

How will you remember the hours you spent
on the back seat looking out
The scenery passing by as you let yourself be transported,
Waiting composedly to arrive at your destination?
You gotta get out of town, but at that time of day, you'll be fine
We're talking about school or your birthday
Carouseling the roundabouts between the superstores
Have fun, darling, get your bag, we're there

Really interesting topic - you get a lot of understated but deep emotion out of it! Makes me remember being driven around by my parents..... odd thing to feel nostalgic for, but I do now. Nice work from @rowanb - particularly like the spoons.

Such a poignant song, giving all the angles, all the different viewpoints, with the kid sitting in back, waiting to arrive, and the parent just in service really, with the payment being the love you feel and the chance to spend maybe a bit of time with the kid growing up so fast and growing away. And the simple rap-type story presentation is clear, not cluttered, letting the story speak.
