Hey there ! Salut à tous !

My first FAWM was in 2020. I love the spirit here, and I came back every february since. I can't seem to produce any song without some sort of a deadline, so FAWM's base idea works great for me.

I love to hear new stuff and try to explain how I perceived it and what I liked. My English is way from perfect, I hope I can avoid misunderstandings. So far, so good, as long as I can see.

It can be hard, though, to find enough time to produce music and listen to all I want to listen. Last year, I kept listenning and commenting all the way through march. And the atmosphere was incredible. I think I'll do it again this year, or feel like leaving the party too early.

I write and sing mostly in french, but I translate every lyrics in english.

I'm really in for collaboration. I can play harmonica, ukulele, electric and folk guitar and sing with a thick french accent.

Thank you for the Friday night waltz comments. I'd never thought about risotto as being hedonistic, but I think you're right ~ it definitely is! :-) I'm getting hungry now just writing this LOL
[avatar]
Thank you for listening- great reviews aand attention to detail.
[avatar]
@nadine
Thank you! Who doesn't want a llama? They're super fluffy!
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind words @ambroise - I'm honored that my music found it's way into your kitchen :) I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and share. Happy to have found your music as well this year!

Thanks for sharing the link. Lavillier does a great job of capturing saudade. I look to the masters, Tom Jobim and Vinicius Moraes as some of the best primary sources with songs like A Felicidade. In my song I was trying to evoke the feeling of saudade in a new context without describing it explicitly and without relying on it's typical markers of bossa nova form or overt lyrics of lost love. It's an interesting space to try to occupy. Glad you enjoyed it!
[avatar]
Ha, thanks for the comment on my spider man song, and I had no idea that there was an XKCD comic about it as well! Fun to see that.

@cts
Thank you kindly for the comment on Made 2 Love. I chuckled at the line where you mentioned this is the first song you’ve heard where food wasn’t mentioned. Love it! The whole potato chip thing was a running gag that went waayyyyy beyond its time, but still, I did get free chips from it! Thanks again. I’ll be listening and commenting.

Can I just say that your interpretation of Afterglow as a cure for existential angst made my day. I find that both hilarious and not far from the truth. The inspiration for this song was “saudade” which is a common ethos in Brazilian music that I have always loved. It has no perfect translation in English but it is usually translated as “sweet sorrow” or “nostalgia”. Reading your review makes me feel that maybe I came close to forging both emotional sides of that double edged sword afterall. Thank you for the thoughtful response!

@cts
Congrats on the FAWM win! And thanks for busting my zong (though I suspect there may be more out there). Hope all is well.

Bonjour! A chili-dog is a hot dog covered in chili (meat/beans/tomato base) in a bun. It tastes best after midnight and after a few drinks :-) Thanks for listening!!

@reklov
Thanks for your lovely comment on my "Brücken"-Song! Ich habe mich sehr gefreut!
[avatar]
Hey, next year, let's do something with your harmonica featuring!
[avatar]
@nadine
Nope. "No time for blues" desperately needs guitars, because (a) I cannot play bar chords and rhythms with mutes yet and (b) I don't have an electric guitar. So the guitar in this demo is programmed, and I dont want to use fake guitars on final songs. I am open for any electric guitarist who is able to play the chords and add some further mojo :)
[avatar]
Thanks for the comment on "My sexual fantasy" ... J'aime Pascal Brutal - Ill show you my mug that I bought at my first Angouleme Bande Desinee festival some time!
[avatar]
Thx for sharing Pascal campions work. I was not familiar with it,but it’s great!
[avatar]
@nadine
Thanks for your comments! Glad you enjoyed the energy of my songs.
Most collabs will happen throughout the year. I will rerecord and rearrange nearly everything, cause I'm into full band productions (like Magnetc Rose). When I search for people that's mainly because I can't play / sing. Most instrumentals are MIDI mock ups and I hate the sound of artificial guitars. I don't see myself as a vocalist so I am ALWAYS happy for takers!
[avatar]
Thx for the comment on Dawn Again. That is indeed electric guitar that you hear on the bridge doing it's best sitar impersonation. Actually I wasn't going for a sitar sound but it's a sound characteristic I love so I'm sure it's no accident it came out sounding that way.
[avatar]
p.s I agree that "The epic dimension of ukulele is not enough recognised." Very well put!
[avatar]
I very much appreciated your encouragement to put music to "Heads Will Roll" -- thank you for your kind attention! :) I like the expression "drawing the scenarium sword," as well! And you've commented kindly on several others of my songs, as well. Thank you extra!
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to "The Algorithm". It's true, the systems we use watch us like a hawk. We can either fear it or laugh (and sing) about it.
[avatar]
Heh it's okay the lyrics are meant to be ones like Euro rockers used to sing during the cold war that sound cool but do not like to be looked at closely - so you aren't missing anything really!
Except the wall is supposed to be something - either the Berlin wall or the traitor's hanging spot in the Handmaid's Tale, but you can pick which you like!
[avatar]
@amelea
Thanks for checking out Arms-Length Atlas! I didn't realize there's so much choreography bled right into the lyrics, that's so cool to imagine a dance for it 😀 #MythFAWMmology
[avatar]
Though your placeholdering business looks like you're not sitting back and relaxing yet - I'm looking forward to whatever you're cooking up there.
[avatar]
Thanks for comments on "Honey Eyes"! I meant to reply sooner but I was busy with the dayjob. Yes, I know, the chords are probably not acceptable to music theorists but they worked for the song, and that's what matters, right?
[avatar]
Wonderful comments that cut to the chase on "Music Or Bust." Thank you!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your careful listening and your kind, specific comments about "Loyalty." You noticed a number of things in the song that I'm happy about, so your observations are very encouraging. Congratulations on a productive FAWM!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comments on The Slump and Let Go. I really enjoyed your comments :)
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment. I love the visualizations you got out of my songs.
[avatar]
Ambroise, what an intriguing--and complimentary--comment on Something For Nothing. Thank you!

@pippa
Thanks for listening to D Is for Druid and I'm glad you liked it. I did not know that about the written lore (or absence of).

Definitely be in touch in March and we have applied for our visa now so hopefully we might be in Angouleme finally from April!

@kirjis
Hey, thanks for all your very positive comments! I'm sorry for not saying anything earlier, I appreciate them!
[avatar]
Hi, Ambroise. I'm glad you enjoyed the full experience of Somewhere In The World, It's Yesterday. Yes, "Time" has been a subject in many artistic endeavors. Glad this song helped you understand the film, What Time Is It. Thanks for your comments.

@owling
Bonjour Ambroise!

[avatar]
Oh blimey! Please tell him from me how amazing I think you and he are! I think that is great and a bit weird but how great and weirdly amazing is that?
[avatar]
(re: my Katerine comment) De rien, Monsieur! c'est approprié. I was specifically thinking of "Homosexuel", the song he wrote for Julien Doré not in some weird way, just the mood was about the same, but then again perhaps "Le Banane" or "Liberté" was in my mind at the same time! I am a huge Katerine fan, having travelled to Brussels to see him on that album tour. Anyway, great song. And God bless the ukulele for funny songs!
[avatar]
I am very glad you like my addition on our collab! 🙏🤗
[avatar]
Ambroise, Thank you for your comments on If This is Love, I Don't Like It! Yes, Gwyn is a master at putting words to music. You made me look up "sable mouvant"--Quicksand! Yep! that's it! So glad you liked our song. Gwyn saw the lyrics, and about 10 seconds later, we had this great song! He's a miracle worker!
[avatar]
And thank you for your comments.
My music for Banville's poem needs an iteration of editing. I improvised the whole melody after pressing the REC button, not even understanding every line of the text. Then added the orchestra. Quick and dirty. Never tried that before. Obviously the result can be made more consistent.
Écrevisse, iniquité... I really have to correct my pronunciation, even rhythm in some places.
But many syllables I'll leave out, contrary to the strict poetic meter, le vers. Sometimes that makes the music flow better, though something is lost from the poetic Parnassian standpoint.
Yes, I'm a fan of Debussy, and Ravel, and others, such as Lili Boulanger. Fauré composed his Pavane in le Vésinet.
You mentioned Léo Ferré somewhere. He was a Ravel fan and if I were to choose my favorite singer of chansons, I'd choose Ferré, he just happens to be monégasque rather than a Parisian.
[avatar]
You're right, I'd prefer tracks separately for vox, ukulele, harmonica. I suspect the harmonica wouldn't take my eq tweaking so well, if I try to do something to the vox. Harmonicas and accordions can be pretty tricky to record. Céline's accordion sounded really nice on that other song! I sometimes wish I had a real accordion...
I use mp3 and wav. But I'm sure the software can handle some other formats as well. If I can get the audio tracks within a few days, maybe I can do my thing before the end of this FAWM.

@leepat
avec plaisir! sent you an email. tempo is 160
[avatar]
Hey Thomas! Just finished our collab. Do you want to listen before I post it here?
[avatar]
[avatar]
Ah, Yann Tiersen - he's the guy that wrote the music for Amélie right? I love that soundtrack. But I haven't heard any of his other stuff so thanks for the recommendation! Yes I've been busy - determined to make it to 14 songs this year!!!
[avatar]
Hi, Ambroise, Thanks for your comments on Never Fall In Love With A Musician. It brought me to your page, where I picked your first post, Le Foyer to listen to. My comments are on that page. :)
[avatar]
I so appreciate your comments on "A Taste of Yesterday" and "Worth Slaying For" -- especially your deep Buffy understanding. ;) That Bbm6 chord is a keeper!
[avatar]
[avatar]
Thank you for those videos you shared of the cavaquinho. The simplicity of the duet and the cavaquinho together is absolutely beautiful, and the rhythmic accompaniment is just perfect. Equally amazed at the music that the man in the second video can get out of such a small instrument. Brilliant!
[avatar]
Maybe you can record some guitars ... I add the bass ... and then we add lyrics in French and German about the same topic ... what do you think?
[avatar]
[avatar]
No worries!
[avatar]
But maybe we can create a new song together? A brand new collab? I am dreaming about a French and German thing ... a kind of duett?
[avatar]
[avatar]
"Sensibilité Musette" is the album I like, yes! It's the happy fast jazz waltzes on there which I love, all with a quirky instrumental backing. Please do check out Regis Gizavo, some great videos on youtube and his albums "Mikea" / "Samy Olombelo". Thanks for sharing those links - haven't watched it all yet but wow, very inspiring playing, will look for more of their work!
[avatar]
@pippa
Thanks, Ambroise, for your thoughts on my tune. And for the links to all those wonderful musicians. I see a rabbit hole opening up before me. I'm going to have to spend some time exploring other YouTube of those folks. Thanks again. Woo-hoo!
[avatar]
To be honst: yesterday I thought again about a collab with you ... But I can only deliver a bass and some vocals .... but I will remember your offer.
[avatar]

Re: Coucou! Phew! In my head, a direct translation would be "coo-ey!"; as shouted across at you a crowded square and it may not turn out to be someone you expected/hoped to see (I won't even tell you the one place I encountered it in France) but that's probably just my internalized homophobia :)
[avatar]
OK that makes perfect sense! Merci beaucoup! I will correct my capitalization accents tomorrow
[avatar]
Merci monsieur; pour votre commentaire au sujet du "Ca Craint" - re the captailization, I was always led to believe at school that you DON'T include puncuations on French when capitalizing. So 'Etre' not 'Être' - is this not true and I have been lied to by my teachers? Ah, ça craint! :)
[avatar]
Coucou! So good to hear you once again, so much so I used the phrase 'Coucou' with no understanding of French social etiquette! I offer free use of bass on any or all of your songs. It's available if you think "what this needs is some shoddy bass." For instance I have a bass part mapped out for "Le Foyer" which has a Dalida slow vibe to it (well, not really, but as close as i can describe it at this time of night)?
[avatar]
@amelea
Honored that you actually wikipedia'd it! I'm in a BritLit class right now so we're often reading some background on authors while also reading their poems, so this kind of feels like I get to be on the other side of that now haha
Thanks for the support! :)
[avatar]
Hey Ambroise! Thanks for your feedback to our collab!
What about you? No songs ahead? I hope I hear something from you. I really enjoyed your songs!
[avatar]
Thanks for your comment on my bluesy rant.
[avatar]
Thanks for taking a listen. Looking forward to your songs.

ha ha... mutiny i the playground! Glad you liked my shanty.

@pippa
Hey Ambroise, Merci pour votre message. I'm so glad you enjoy my first tune! By the way, I went and listened to your 2022 album, and I'd love to play it on our community radio station KOPN.org on my world music show. If that's ok with you, could you email me a download?
[avatar]
Moltes mercés per votre message. A bientot!
