Liner Notes

This one is a meditation on the different sources that informed the imagination of my seventeen-year-old self: books, commercials, music, movies, and TV. It came pouring out as soon as I heard @alicemoges beautiful song Maybe It's Symbolic. I imagine the narrator is singing along with Alice to a song on a mixtape some friend from camp made for her.

I aspire to eventually add a clarinet line. Maybe in March...

The song is a Morph of the Alice's song Maybe It's Symbolic which you can find: https://write.fawm.org/songs/312357
The guidelines are you start with a song and change half. Details and signup here: https://write.fawm.org/forums/2976
The exercise also got me to thinking that when I get that feeling that all my songs sound the same, I can just reframe it as each of my songs is probably a morph of some other song of mine.

Here's the whole MORPH chain

Lyrics

You sit behind me in English class
We’re slogging through Odysseus
His boat's just got him one page past the Sirens

When it’s your turn, you read words wrong
It’s somehow like those sirens song
I don’t plan to stuff my ears with cotton

It’s unlikely
That you’ll ask me
To Homecoming, White Christmas, or the Prom
It’s unlikely
You’ll ever ask me
But I’ve made up my mind
've made up my mind
Oh, I've made up my mind, I will say yes

You throw touch downs all the time
I play the clarinet at the fifty-yard line
We both appreciate a good reception

At lunch we lounge with different crowds
Cross-breed eating’s not allowed
Maybe we could make one small exception

It’s unlikely
That you’ll ask me
To Homecoming, White Christmas, or the Prom
It’’s unlikely
You’ll ever ask me
But I’ve made up my mind
I've made up my mind
I've made up my mind, I will say yes

Do you remember your invisible ball
Even with my glasses, I could catch ‘em all
At recess when we still believed in cooties

If we were a commercial for Mister Pibb
You never would consider me until you did
Stranger things have happened in the movies

It’s unlikely
You'll ever ask me
But I've made up my mind, I will say yes

I love the slant rhyme of its unlikely that you’ll ask me. Alludes to maybe it’s symbolic or whatever you want to call it!

Such clever lyrics and a wholly original take on the pining for the unobtainable (although if he could have read your thoughts, he couldn't have resisted!).

Great story! It never really gives us the answer, so we have to decide for ourselves if she got to go out with her guy, but hearing all the thoughts going on in her head about what she's thinking is absolutely delightful. Great write!

I love your rhymes! This is so charming! The minor mood is so fitting to the anguish of youth. Great song!

Damn. Banger! First off the instrumentation is just perfect. It has this uneasy, rambling pace about it that fits the theme so well. Then the open verse is just chef's kiss with the mention of Odysseus, or maybe I'm just a nerd, but it sets up my favorite verse in the whole song. "When it’s your turn, you read words wrong
It’s somehow like those sirens song
I don’t plan to stuff my ears with cotton". This one is too much, right to my soul. I'm not even going to go on about the chorus, because you know how good it it is. Inspiring, I need to write stuff like this. I also really like the treatment on the last bars of the song, Hit me up with that version with clarinet if you ever get it in place, sounds very intriguing.

Amazing journey #morph1 has gone on. This is a fitting conclusion to wonderful and creative work done by all of us. Happy to have been part of the chain. I really enjoyed your singing, so emotional and engaging.

Sounds great, I really like the sort of eastern european flavor of the music. Beautiful melody. Love the line "cross-breed eating's not allowed" - really got me thinking back to those silly high school cliques.

cross-breed eating lolz!
great concrete story and I love your delivery - the yearning, defiance, humour in the face of adversity…
wonderful!
