bits and pieces (and pieces and bits)

Skirmish: Bits And Pieces (@lyricslinger)

Liner Notes

Bits and pieces had me inspired to write about relationships that leave you in bits and pieces... I was inspired to write the story about a friend of mine who was held at gunpoint in her mom's house after getting home early from a ski trip. People had staked out the house and were there when she got back. She was later able to identify them in a lineup but now their sentence is almost up. #acoustic #acousticonetake #skirmish #jazz

Lyrics

CHORUS
You chewed me up and you spit me out
Left me in bits and pieces with no way out
Can't understand why so I sit here and cry
In bits and pieces and pieces and bits
Oh in bits and pieces and pieces and bits
So it is

VERSE 1
A blindfold. A gun.
Too scared to run.
I swallow my ring
to protect the thing
I hold my breath.
I want to fight.
Instead I just try
to be polite.

CHORUS

VERSE 2
You left with a car full of stuff
and me guilty for having too much
You left but your shadow did not.
It will always be stained in this spot.
A bit here
a bit there,
your memories are scattered
everywhere

CHORUS

Something about how you inverted bits and pieces/pieces and bits really spoke to me. Perfect on the #uke !

So harrowing, chilling, and sorrowful a write, @jessicamagoch , and perhaps, unfortunately, about an event that takes place too often, for, from your Liner Notes, onto and through your lyrics, I was reminded--of that similar-to-your-friend's horrific home invasion--of the home break-in and vicious attack on actress Fran Drescher (and her friend) that took place in the 1980s, and of the Clutter family in 1959 Kansas about which Truman Capote wrote in his "nature-of-evil-themed" nonfic book "In Cold Blood."

Powerful lyric and song, Jessica. I think in song your choice to go with thin, delicate, innocent-sounding string play adds an even greater depth, meaning, and awfulness reveal about what you're singing in support of your friend (as the sentences of her attackers are coming to an end).

Here's to you, Jessica, for being a singing, supportive voice for your friend via this FAWM skirmish.

A gorgeous combination of vocal and ukulele, terrific lyric given the dark inspiration and lovely choice of chords. What a splendid skirmish this is 😊
