Liner Notes

Late entry for the poetry-themed #skirmish. I mined some of Puck’s lines from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with slight changes to fit in the meter.

For chords I did the #ABCDEFG challenge— all major chords present and dang it was hard to fit some of them in 😝

Lyrics

I am that merry wanderer of the night.
I jest to Oberon and make him smile
And those things do best please me
That befall prepost’rously

I will lead you in a round
Through a bog, through bush, through brake, through brier.
Sometime a horse, sometimes a hound,
A hog, a headless bear, a fire,
And neigh, and bark, and roar, and burn,
Like horse, hound, hog, bear, fire, at every turn

Up and down, up and down,
I will lead you up and down.
I am feared in field and town.
Goblin, lead them up and down

Up and down, up and down,
I will lead you up and down.
I am feared in field and town.
Goblin, lead them

I am that merry wanderer of the night.
I jest to Oberon and make him smile
And those things do best please me
That befall prepost’rously

If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended:
That you have but slumbered here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend

Up and down, up and down,
As I lead you up and down.
I am feared in field and town.
Goblin, lead them up and down

Up and down, up and down,
I will lead you up and down.
I am feared in field and town.
Goblin, lead them up and down

I will lead you in a round
Through a bog, through bush, through brake, through brier.
Sometime a horse, sometimes a hound,
A hog, a headless bear, a fire,
And neigh, and bark, and roar, and burn,
Like horse, hound, hog, bear, fire, at every turn

I am that merry wanderer of the night.
I jest to Oberon and make him smile
And those things do best please me
That befall prepost’rously

This is fantastic! Love the chorus love the merry wanderer of the night section. And now I want to read Midsummer Night's Dream right now. This song could definitely be in a production of it.

The relentlessness of the vocals against that delightfully light percussion is really effective. Can imagine this being sung by a merry jester, or tricksy fae. Great stuff.

Enraptured from the beginning, with the jangling, cantering percussion.

The fey, bardic feel is consistent throughout, but there's every inch as much dynamism in your vocals as there are in the best puck monologue at the Globe theatre.

There's a real skill in the arrangement of existing lines, especially in moving them from the context of silence to a partnership with rhythm and music. And it falls on my ears as if you'd written every word yourself. Bravo.

Great job with that chord challenge - that's gotta be a hard one! Love the vibe and your melody and vocal delivery - very Puck-ish.

Oh I LOVE this. One of my all-time favorite plays, made musical so beautifully! Fantastic vocals too.

I love it, and I agree with nwhosings, it feels very appropriate for you to be channeling Puck! This is delightful

Hehehehehe, oh gawd that cackle gave me life.
How do you have all those chords in there and it still sounds so cohesive? I am in awe. Puck would be proud.
I feel like it is very fitting that you sing Puck's words....the vibes do fit.
I love the crossing of your vocal break like that, almost a yodel but not quite....

That's a really catchy chorus. All that up and down is very fun! I have no idea how you fit all those chords in, but go you. Nicely done! 'prepost’rously' and then the giggle. Showmanship! I like it.

That is mighty impressive! I'm in awe of your vocal and compositional nimbleness!

Oh man, the source materials, the construction, and this wonderful delivery make it so hard to believe this was built in an hour! Wonderful work. I'm really struck by the chorus. Its an ear worm I'm pretty sure; will report back 😆
