Walks Like a Dog

DISCLAIMER: I think N*zis and fascism are bad, actually. If you don't feel the same way, this song probably isn't for you. Kindly move along <3

I can't seem to stop writing incendiary protest songs. Guess I had a lot to say about the inauguration and the current state of our nation after all. I swear I sat down to try and write a fun little fictional villain-perspective story for the skirmish, but alas, I'm firmly stuck in realism for the time being.

Lyrics

The new regime’s in power now
We go round and round
Chasing our tails about
Plausible doubt

We are all amphibians
This cauldron labyrinthian
The water’s getting hotter
And there’s no one way out

So say again how he had nothing to do with the
Playbook he’s playing by now

How can you not see
The depths of the irony
Rig the election and fire the opposition
I think I’ve seen this movie before

‘Cause if it walks like a dog and salutes like a dog
You won’t convince me it’s autistic genius

Wasn’t it that dead white man
Thomas Jefferson
Who said “If the law is unjust
We must disobey”

His crimes against humanity
While fighting for our liberty
Tipped the scales of history
That you’re blind to today

So say again how liberation
Means there’s less to go around

How can you not see
The depths of the irony
Label us terrorists for being anti-fascist
I think I’ve seen this movie before

‘Cause if it walks like a dog and makes laws like a dog
We have an obligation

To rise and resist
Protect and assist
With every twist of the knife in their hand
We rise and resist
We fight to exist
Believe in a future that’s better than this
We rise

‘Cause if it walks like a dog and it bites like a dog, he’s not
The only one whose teeth have been sharpened

Your rhymes and metaphors are really cool. I'm really enjoying your choices regarding the vocal melody.

Killer lyrics backed by a powerful performance! Excellent wordplay in the chorus. Spot on!

This is so bad-ass. I’m such a sucker for a key change too and you pulled that off so perfectly! Watch out dogs, this kitty’s ready to claw back 😾

I think the rhyme with "resist" and "assist" is very clever. A call for fight but also for care. I love it.
And i agree we need protest songs right now (in France too, sadly)

These are the exact kind of songs we NEED right now. This melody is absolutely addicting. AMAZING job!!

btw - the line "if it walks like a dog and makes laws like a dog" is just *chef's kiss*

yup. I can't even with the news at all right now. I don't even see how any of this resolves. It's extremelly disheartening. So, yeah...protest songs are for sure in order. When reality and fantasy are hard to tell apart.

Oh, wow! Where to start?? I love everything about this! From the disarmingly sweet melody to the perfect prechorus to the shifting chorus! And the final couplet “…not the only one whose teeth have been sharpened” is the perfect final note. Brilliant work.

Phenomenal song. I'm so scared.

The lyrics are on point, and the whole thing is great musically. I especially like how it shifts to another gear in the bridge. Such good writing!

Powerful and beautiful song. We write about what our heart tells us. We do live in strange times although protest someday have been out for rather a long time. Great job on singing and playing with sincere feelings. Love your performance ❤️

yeah. Yes.

This is really well done. As always, I love your phrasing as you navigate these incredible lyrics. Powerfully done!

Musical protests are so powerful. You’re amazing.

Impressive how distinct the different sections are yet fit together so well. The rhymes all seem to pour out of you and are mellifluous to the ears. I'm not sure I get the "autistic genius" line? Is that something that gets said about 45/47?

This is a really amazing protest song your voice is very moving and the lyrics are just so fitting, that I say yes all the time
