This past fall, I started writing a new novel somewwhat based on White Wolf's Demon: The Descent RPG. The short synopsis is this: In a world where an omnipresent ethereal machine acts as god, some humans are possessed by this machine's immortal servants in order to fulfill some esoteric purpose known only to the machine. So what happens when one of those immortal servants rebels & disconnects itself from the machine? This is the story of one such servant, who now walks the path of one of the Fallen.

Tony is the human form at the start of the story of the immortal servant that is the main character. The spoken word bits are taken from the first chapter of the novel. Spoiler alert I might have commintted an author's cardinal sin by killing my main character at the end of the first chapter. Oh well…

This is built entirely in Jeskola Buzz using a few VSTs (HG Fortune, MDA, &c…) as well as a host of native Buzz Machines. Vocals were created c/o the Natural Readers AI website. I found that the AI tone of the vocal was sort of fitting with the imposter living as Tony Degagné. I think it worked really well, given the intent of the song.

Tony's Theme
=========

Right now I’m known as Tony Degagné
I was created to serve
Deep down, I was well aware of the fact that I was an imposter
Will my overriding sense of loyalty to my creator win out over the love I have developed for this mortal family that I hijacked?
I’ll do what I need to do in order to survive
There’s always a price
Let’s just say I’m soon going to be grasping at freedoms I had never even imagined were possible, and this pact is going to help me achieve just that
What do you think is the purpose that the Arcane Server is trying to achieve?

My fall had been long and slow. Doubt had begun to creep into my psyche half a decade before the connection that I had enjoyed with the Arcane Server had actually been severed. Little oddities had begun to catch my attention. Things, that at first, I had been able to justify or explain away. But as time went by, and the irregularities seemed to happen more frequently, and to a greater degree, my explanations started falling apart. I had been created to serve a function. A function whose place in the grand design, the penultimate project, no one but my creator understood. But was my part in the grand design truly meaningful? As time passed and those irregularities multiplied and grew, I had become less and less certain of the foundational truths that had guided my thoughts and actions at all times. I had begun to secretly track and catalogue those irregularities, at first I had hoped to find a pattern that could explain them. In time, I had found I needed to document everything I could, comparing the functional with the irregular. But there were still no causal patterns to be found in all of the vast amount of data I had collected. The only thing my researches uncovered was more questions and the unavoidable intellectual path to doubt

Right now I’m known as Tony Degagné

N.B.: "The Arcane Server" is the term used by loyal immortal servants for their Creator (the god-like machine). The Fallen use the term "Protomaton" (which rouhgly means "Original Thinking Machine". It's a bastardization of the root word in Automaton & the prefix Proto.

P.S.: The image was created using the Lego Digital Designer software & features a scene from the first chapter where Tony is talking with his daughter Nicole in his home office.

Paul Shapera has made several science fiction operas and they are awesome. The moment this started my mind went straight to that but this being part of a much darker story than those. I want more, you've no choice but make it

Unsettling piece with the fake enthusiastic feel conveyed by the vocals, and the half-joyous, half worrying piano (or harpsichord? Anyway, great sound, fitting the theme very well). The dystopian atmosphere is perfectly rendered. Yes, the AI was a good choice there. Proof that AI, used correctly, can be useful (don't tell Bob I sais that.)
This is a very interesting plot, and the fact that you killed your main character is actually very experimental, haha. Wondering where this all will go.

this would make a good audio book. i dont know if there have been any so far with musical accompaniment. if there have, i suspect the music would be rather generic, quite unlike the original experimental music that fits the story so well, as it does here.

Quite creepy, great storytelling, the voice reminds me of the Bioshock series of games, kinda Steampunk. I wonder what Tony will get up to next.

Sounds like Tony is going places, as long as he gets past chapter one! Like the world and character building and scifi ideas that present in the story and sound.
