Liner Notes

I've had a bit of a slow start to this year's FAWM but at least I've got my first song posted! This was the third one I started this month but the first I've actually finished.

It was inspired by a quote about grief which David Niven said to Lauren Bacall when Humphrey Bogart died and was then mentioned in a TV show I was watching the other day. Convoluted!

#grief #indie #dreampop

Lyrics

Grief is a picture
You hang on the wall
A statement piece
That encircles all of you
Reckless abandon's
Okay for a while
But it soon wears thin
And goes out of style

But in the end...

Every choice is a chance
Every choice is a chance
Every choice is a chance
To grow

That painting still hangs
Til some future day
When you no longer
Need it displayed
You take it down
And put it away
Though the picture's gone
The memory remains

But in the end...

Every choice is a chance
Every choice is a chance
Every choice is a chance
To grow

Every choice is a chance
Every choice is a chance
Every choice is a chance etc etc

Love that wacky guitar choice. Possibly it’s a little too loud and competes with the vocal too much but *shrug*. Kooky and fun despite the melancholic feel.

Oh love me a waltz, a wistful n whimsical one no less. Love how it gets a lil darker with the wonky guitar but still hopeful. Amazing lyrics n vocals are great. Awesome song!

Really enjoyed this. Strong lyrics and your usual great singing. Lovely build too. Some excellent guitar choices happening here.

This is great - Immediately it made me think of the commemorative artwork I had for my feline soon after she passed, as I couldn't bear not to "see" her anymore (after a long interesting life) so immediately I could relate to this lyric

Great chorus, excellent opening verse. Bravo

Wow! You had me gripped from the start and the build was awesome! :)

You've got a really cool ghostly waltz here. Grief is put into the positive perspective that it can be used as a chance to grow and learn and all the elements in here communicate that.

That first verse is especially good: the idea that grief is on display (and can make others uncomfortable), but eventually becomes more of a background than a gallery piece, as people get on with their lives. I like your chord choices and also the way the music slowly builds to become a kind of echo of the frenzy of grief when it first comes.

Wonderful production makes this extra special. Moving from simple piano and voice to that nasty guitar and big sound at the end works so well.

The melody and vocal go together so well. I absolutely love the "But in the end" line. That's a gorgeous piece of dynamic contrast and so perfect. That warbly thing is awesome, too.

Unrelated question: Why do people not make their songs downloadable so I can save them for post-fawm listening? No reason to ask *innocent whistle.*

The voice and piano sound great at the start, but I love love love all the guitars on this - the wobbly one, the high one, the big chordy one at the end, the way the vocal is subsumed by them. All superb. Great lyric too. Slow start or not, this is a banger.

Love how this builds from the bouncy piano into full-on epic dreamy indie-rock. Great start!

The moment that big wobbly guitar came in I knew this was going in a cool direction. I really love how it dives off into waves of noise towards the end. It's like that moment when grief escapes confinement for a little while, all the while you're repeating a well intentioned aphorism like some kind of anchor.
So, yes, works for me!

Against the advice of Jarvis Cocker, I was reading the lyrics as the song started, and the first line doesn't match the lyrics! lol
There seems to be a fidelity upgrade since last year, the drums and guitar have a nice full, crisp sound to them. I like the haunting e-bow (I assume?). Great crescendo at the end.

Hahaha I totally called the build and you DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

Like, I thought this was just a piano and dude song, and I was about to comment that, if produced up, a big build at the end would be sick.

BUT YOU WERE WAY AHEAD OF ME and opened up with the guitar.

Nice work.

Awesome that youre off the mark with such a great track! The change of pace on that pre chorus is a great lead into it
