Born as a Ghost

Liner Notes

Taking some time away from the concept album to just bash out a little power-pop tune.

This song began life as an experiment in December using programmed guitar. Yep - all the guitar you hear on this tune is sampled and programmed... I can't play lead like that, and my palm-muting is a lot sloppier, hence the experiment. While it's very tight, there is something lost when you're just using amp sims, compared to an actual amp. I'll have to learn to play it properly one day.

The vocal was a quick one recorded during my lunch break at work today, and mixed in about three minutes - just a demo, etc. The neighbours cranked up their goddamn lame music while I was doing it, so hopefully none of that seeped into the mix. The echo should be handled a lot more carefully, but again, just a demo. Onto the next song!

Drums: Just Add Drums
Bass: Kontakt Prime Bass
Guitars: Session Guitarist Electric Sunburst Deluxe via Tonex
Synths: Minimonsta, Kontakt Analog Dreams
Choir: Kontakt Jacob Collier Audience Choir

All through the usual tape, console, bus comps etc.

Lyrics

born as a ghost
born as a ghost, in the distant past
from pillar to post
born as a ghost among the underclass

i don't know why i'm here, nor do you
why do i need to have a point of view?

we're born as ghosts
we don't need to change a thing, no

born in the shade of the pop culture
with nothing to say, but i might go far?
from pillar to post in a rented car
my heroes are dead, but their's aren't

i don't know why i'm here, nor do you
why do i need to have a point of view?

i don't know why i'm here, nor do you
why do i need to have a point of view?
why do we need to be 'on' all the time?
isn't it good enough that it rhymes?

i'm giving, i'm giving it all up, yeah
but why?
because i don't care

i'm giving, i'm giving it all up, yeah
but why?
because i don't care

born as a ghost

Fun, catchy, also, as usual, your productions are ridiculously cool and tight and excellent.

I liked the repeat after me with the guitar and your vocals. :) Very surprised this is programmed guitars. Very catchy!! I'm impressed with your vocals given the context! Great job! 🐸

Came here bcos you wrote in this thread (https://write.fawm.org/forums/3233) that the guitars are programmed, fully expecting them to be sh*t. ;-) Not only was I proven wrong, but the songwriting is great too! Really catchy!

This kills. Absolutely the sweet spot of 1979 power pop. Would never have guessed the guits were VSTis.

none of this sounds sampled to me. that’s crazy. you would have fooled me if you told me you played it all. good work dude

I love a good power pop punk tune! That's def the best programmed guitar I've ever heard, props to that. Fantastic hook and energetic pacing. Nice work!

Wow amazing what you achieved with the programmed guitar! Born as a ghost is such a cool title/hook and the giving it all up yea is catchy as - with the overall sound and the cheerful nihilism i definitely agree with the early 2000s feel, nice one

Dude really cool song. Love the intro/outro guitar riff. Is that an Fmaj to Fmin? LOVE when a riff has a progression like that!

I also really dig how you syncopate your lyrics with the rhythm during the verse. Born.As.A.Ghost and Pill.ar.To.Post. It's really a rad style and something I try to incorporate in my own music. You do it really well.

The melody you picked out for the ‘I’m giving, I’m giving it all up yeah’ is brilliant. Love the programmed guitars. They actually sound pretty great. Production and mix are spot on as to be expected. Great tune
