Still on my quest to find the most sing-alongable protest song. I think I'm getting closer! It was a good challenge to simplify the chorus and resist the urge to decorate the whole thing with pretty poetry.

I toured perpetually in my little Prius back and forth across the continental US from 2015-2019, and boy, did I see a lot of things and meet a lot of people. I also saw evidence of the incoming Trump presidency in the southern & midwestern states in 2016 when people in my Pacific Northwest echo chamber said again and again, "There's no way he's going to win." They said it once, they said it again, and look where it got us. We can't afford complacency or to rely on common sense to win out without our direct action.

Lyrics

I’ve driven through the country
I’ve seen its wonders and its scars
I crawled on top of red rocks
‘Neath a sky of sprawling stars

I’ve relied on kindness
Of people from all walks of life
Each one is precious
Every one has a right to exist

I’m writing what I know
Here’s what I know

I know that we can do this
I know we’re stronger than we thought
I know that it gets better when we work together
I know that we won’t take it
I know that we are all we’ve got
I know that we are better when we work together

La, la, la la la
La, la, la la la

I’ll fight for my country
For trans folks and immigrants
I’ve had a little practice
In civil disobedience

It takes some kindness
Empathy and knowing we’re beloved
That’s where you’ll find us
Liberation starts with love

I’m writing what I know
Here’s what I know

I know that we can do this
I know we’re stronger than we thought
I know that it gets better when we work together
I know that we won’t take it
I know that we are all we’ve got
I know that we are better when we work together

So sing
La, la la la, la
La, la la la, la
La, la la la, la
La, la la la, la

I know that we can do this
I know we’re stronger than we thought
I know that it gets better when we work together
I know that we won’t take it
I know that we are all we’ve got
I know that we are better when we work together

So sing
La, la, la la la
La, la, la la la

Your spirit is infectious! I love the positive spin on the topic. It is easy to complain, but more wonderful to uplift your listeners. You voice is so beautiful too.

I would love to collab one day. Something different. I do love what you have to say. You are way better at taking a stand than me.

This chorus is so good. You have a way of writing affirming things without being cheesy that I'm very jealous of! 😀

Beautiful write, Wonder! Love the way your voice flips so effortlessly between your amazing belt and your head voice! There’s an aire of Broadway here! Maybe you’re on to something-The musical of 2025? Eh!?

So fantastic! The lyrics are amazing and inspiring, and the guitar is really propelling me along with the meaning of the piece. And you're right that this is a sing along anthem...no, actually a belt-along anthem. I can definitely hear an audience singing that chorus along with you, especially at the end when the guitar drops out. Powerful!

This is great, Wonder! There's a lot of power behind it, in the specificity of the verses and the universality of the chorus. Really gorgeous!
