Liner Notes

A gift song—one of those that just shows up, lyrics and all. It’s in 5/4, which keeps things interesting. I wanted a break from full production, and I always include at least one acoustic track. I am in the zone, already halfway.

Lyrics

Verse 1
For many you are there
So much you will share
Answered all their prayers
Getting married in the square

Some find you easily
Like they’re turning a key
Eventually
I gave up the dream

Chorus 1
You skipped over
Left me colder
Yes, I am free
But I don’t wanna be

Verse 2
You all give advice
Like you are so wise
You should realize
Luck was on your side

Logic has no place
No reason for my fate
But I have today
And you may come my way

Chorus 2
I am open
I’m not broken
Yes, I am free
And I will still believe

I love songs in 5/4 and am impressed with anyone who can write one (especially so well). It both drives and keeps things off-kilter. I like the shift in the chorus from "I don't wanna be" to "I will still believe."

Always cool when an odd time signature sounds so natural. It really catches your ear! Like calligraphy.

The panned acoustics sound gorgeous. Love those chords in the chorus, and that they're not full-on major key type things, which would have made the words sounds perhaps too bombastic. Particularly in the context of the first chorus, where there seems to be a bit of nuance in the 'don't wanna be' line. Short and sweet man, great write. The ones that fall out fully formed are always good! 5/4 - you're a braver man than I.

This has a nice lean forward feel to it - if that makes any sense.
Sweet sound on the guitar, and sung quite well. One day I will escape 4/4, but that day will not be today...

a short and sweet proclamation of freedom from the negativity surrounding. not quite a joyous song, but imbued with a personal optimism that won me over. the guitar arrangement is unique and keeps the lyrics nicely syncopated.
