Liner Notes

With this song I'm ticking off the box for two challenges: #GhostwriterChallenge and #ignoredinstrument.
Actually I was planning to ghostwrite for another artist I absolutely adore, but today this idea came up and it reminded me so much of Dead Dan Dance that I just had to go all in and write it "for them". Of course they'd do a much better job, especially with the drums. But I used my very much neglected egg shakers and tried some finger drumming on my Shaman Drum. I had so much fun with that. Someday I'll have to buy bongos or something (as if I wasn't molesting my neighbors enough).

I decided to - as Lisa Gerrard does - not sing in an actual language but in what some call "light language". You could also say it's just random vowels and consonants. I like singing like that sometimes, just using my voice like an instrument, expressing without words. For the recording of the vocals I had to be quiet though as it was late already. Might develop and layer them more in the future.

Did I mention btw that I absolute love the sound of oboes?! I'm so obsessed with them in songs.

Khonsu is the Egyptian moon god. It's nearly full moon again.

Light language is something I only learned about a couple years ago, but I LOVE how it sounds when it's done well. And this is done really well!

Thanks for the introduction to Dead Can Dance. I went to hear Pierrot Lunaire the other night, and loved the spoken/sung style in that. You're an adventurer!

This reminds me of Arooj Aftab, she sings some of her songs in urdu and uses her voice in a similar way. Very nice atmosphere, I can smell the spices in the air in a soukā€¦ was listening to this with ipods, nice panning with the drums

Very nice. Very Dead Can Dance, with some Elizabeth Fraser vibes to the vocals too. I could listen to this all day. To be fair, this was very much in my wheelhouse back in my late teen goth days (pre-emo, more old school Sisters of Mercy goth), so wanting to listen to this all day is not revelatory in my case. Awesome work!

Great atmosphere on this one. LOVE the world music influence. Your vocals sound amazing and fit so well with everything else!

I'm only vaguely aware of Dead Can Dance's work, but you've certainly carried that slow, intense vibe. I was not aware of 'light language', but that's very cool and as a person who hates writing lyrics, might be something I should try! The vocal delays are really cool too, creates such a dramatic atmosphere.

"Light language" I've been in love with since Mike Odlfield and Maggie Reilly. Beautiful singing, very eastern feel, of course. And the vocal layering adds a quite arcane and mysterious/chilling feel. This would make superb film work (not underscore, too demanding of a listen for that. Oboes, fortunately I was never able to indulge my desire to learn, as I've since found that double reeds give me hell, but I understand yous oboelove!

This sounds very mysterious and haunting. Nice to hear your classical touch here. You have some great control over the vibrato. No idea which language this is but it sounds cool. And it wants to make me play d&d....

Love this! Awesome vibe, reminds me a little bit of the game Forgotten City which has Egyptian themes among others. The shaman drum sounds good and fits well here.

@sbs
I'm totally into using the voice as an instrument with no particular comprehensible words. This is so surreal. Fantastic!

Beautiful tune, amazing atmosphere production and vocals! I am not as well versed in the language of light but I consider myself a great mumbler, normally it always sound better than vocals with lyrics (for me at least :)
