A lot of us are going through some very hard, challenging times. I decided to embrace my inner folksinger and write a song to comment on what I'm feeling and what is going on. I thought I'd write a song that we could do at the Kenosha Hootenanny as a community sing type song. I hope y'all find inspiration in it.

Lyrics

The Heck

Just how the heck can this be?
We’re on the wrong road, can’t you see?
We’ve lost our way, we’ve been betrayed
And to think we once were free...
How the heck can this be?

Just what the heck can we do?
We’d do it, if we only knew.
Feeling lost, at such a cost
Why should we start anew?
What the heck can we do?

Just where the heck do we start?
Everything’s just crumbling apart.
Spent our lives doing right
Now we’re tumbling off the charts...
Where the heck do we start?

Bridge:
We need again to feel the pride in doing what is right...
We need to work together, no need to always fight.
Release the fear, it’s very clear, love’s the only way...
Our duty here, it now appears are for better days.

Just how the heck can this be?
We’re on the wrong road, can’t you see?
We’ve lost our way, we’ve been betrayed
And to think we once were free...
How the heck can this be?

Yes this really really resonates with me. Every song I start writing becomes political. My song, "Anybody with a Heart" was pretty much about this too. The title of your track pulled me in right away. Keep playing! As Woody Guthrie said about his guitar, "This machine kills fascists."

Oh, yeah! There's been a huge tilt at FAWM this year to protest songs, and it's great to be in a community of like-minded individuals. And "How the heck can this be?" The past few months have been like playing Monopoly and landing on Go Directly to Jail. Great vocals and guitar work.

I really really love this song! You capture questions that many of us have today. It seems like we made so much progress over the past several decades and now it feels like we are back to square one. I really love the classic folk song feel of the 60s and 70s. Great delivery and wonderful sentiment.

Well-realized prompt. So many interesting internal rhyming going on, as well as Anaphora ( which is a new term for me)
Love the optimism in the bridge.
The music is very fitting
Well done skirmish

Lovely stuff, relatable lyrics and well-delivered. The instrumentation is suitable for the message. I can hear this as a group singalong. Great stuff!

Excellent harmonizing song that will surely build community in its heart and timely message. I feel like the man in black would have wanted to cover this tune.

You have a really good voice. And adding the mandolin is a treat. Keep it up. Good stuff.
