Money Is A Drug

#hiphop #sampling
This last week has been a bit of a struggle for me getting a song complete. Started several ideas but ditched them due to lack of enthusiasm.

Then I got a free ticket to see DJ Shadow the other night, an inspiring performance from the master of sampling and hip hop production. So I felt like having a crack at my own rap thing.

Spent way too long on this, chopping and finding samples can be tedious!

I had a voice memo of the chorus line "Money Is A Drug" from a few months back, so decided to flesh it out. The lyrics are loosely based on a fascinating podcast/book about the history of money, how it came to be and how it tells the story of humanity once we created "money" and bartering systems. Apparently there's evidence dating back some 20,000 years, on a bone discovered to have lines with notches drawn through it, indicating the first form of counting/checking things off. Lyrics

For 20,000 years, it's been plain in sight to see,
find the paper trail, find the root of all evil history,
Make a deal with your neighbour, if they can spare a chicken
if you pay them back in labour you'll be cookin in the kitchen,

they'll be scratching off the notch, but til then your on their watch,
All you have is all you got, until suddenly it's not,
once you have it, you'll want more, feel it grabbing at your core,
turn me loose, what's the use, smack me right up in the jaw,

Money is a drug gotta get me some more
money is a drug gotta get the next score
money is a drug gonna keep me snug
it's a real thug, but it ain't real, it's the devil's deal

it's a steal, it's a damn fine thing, you can buy a diamond ring,
or a car feel like you are a king
Fabricated in the mind, of the entire human kind
it's the kind of thing you wish you had, but shouldn't have to find,

giv em credit where it'd due, keeping tabs ain't nothing new,
all that glitters ain't gold, now theres barely money you can fold,
only states hold the printing plates,
while 1 percent get mates rates,
and tech bros breathe down your neck,
now things look uglier than Shrek

Money is a drug gotta get me some more
money is a drug gotta get the next score
money is a drug gonna keep me snug
it's a real thug, but it ain't real, it's the devil's deal

(He said it would take money, well I'm getting it)

Ha! This is excellent. All of the hunting for samples was worth the effort! Those beats and harmony lines started out fast and intricate, but then gradually became so intertwined and complex. Your lyrics and vocals are very well written and super catchy! Very well done!

I love this.. I think rap suits you! And that banjo riff at the beginning is totally bangin'. "Now things look uglier than Shrek!" - bahahaha!
The outro - just WOW!

This is pretty smart stuff. Tho you’d think you might go for something with a slower tempo to “have a go” at rapping 😉
On the subject of Blindboy, have you listened to anything by the Rubberbandits?

This is very cool Mike! That backing must have taken absolutely ages surely? Loads of really clever variation. Digging the retro games console vibes in places too. Nice work indeed!

Ahhh, this bangs! I love the effort that's gone into the beat, sometimes it's so easy to have a repetitive backing as the rapping takes centre stage. I can hear the DJ Shadow influence, but there's some cool chiptune stuff going on too. Very much enjoyed the chicken/kitchen rhyme. I've heard a few Blindboy podcasts but not this particular one, I'll add it to the list! May I recommend this book along the topic of the history of money: [...]
