Please feel free to critique, as it helps me to learn.

Well, I’m very thankful that I don’t have the insane schedule that I had last year, though I made it work out. This year affords me more time even though life is just busy. So, with some spare time I’ve changed my recording setup so that it is more flexible and efficient and gotten some new (to me) instruments to use this year. I’m going to have a few special guests coming to record with me again this year, as THAT is one of my favorite parts of my FAWM experience. Otherwise, I think some sounds will be very familiar, but others will be new and different.

I play what sounds good to me. FAWM is fun because I have complete control, for better or for worse. My goals this year are to improve on my mic choice and placement, mixing/eq-ing, and hopefully encourage as many of the people around me to be a part of FAWM to any degree, including my wife and two sons, if possible. I also would enjoy collaborating again with my brother, @zecoop (thank you for getting me into this), as well as others who are interested. Writing another children's song with my boys is another goal; I did manage to reach that goal the last several years and I just love doing it. In terms of songwriting, I would like to start with basics and build from there. I tend to be very chordy and would like to give my songs some more space for layering of sounds and texture.

I truly admire the creativity in others and am energized when I am fortunate to have a spark myself, too. I also do appreciate collaborations and will do whatever I have time for.
*A note about collabs: If someone wants to collab on a song that I've posted, I am fine with that and will post it separately. I also am fine with multiple people doing the same song, as I find it fascinating to see how different people do very different things with the same music. My wife always gets the first choices on songs, of course.

Just sent you an email with my contribution to our Digital 4 Track challenge -- please let me know if you have trouble accessing the files. Thanks for all your work on this!
[avatar]
No rush Rob, I’m busy until Sunday, so won’t be able to record anything until then anyway
[avatar]
Could you possibly send me separate stems? Like stereo drums, bass and stereo bounce of the rest? What is the BPM? I imagined some twangy bass VI, sprinkles of omnichord and theremin in addition to vocals could be added
[avatar]
Thanks for your thoughtful comments! That Korg Minilogue looks like a lot of fun.

I made this track with just the microfreak
[avatar]
I bet you’ll have lots of fun with it, I think they compliment each other, the micro freak can do a lot of stuff the minilogue can’t, you have the XD? For the Microfreak it’s worth watching some videos to learn how to fully utilise the modulation matrix, and understanding the way the different envelopes work.
The touch plate keyboard is very expressive. And I love that Arturia has continued to update it with new features

You probably already know this but there’s a lot downloadable user developed oscillator's and such for the XD.
[avatar]
Thank you! I haven't made any major changes to my set up, just gradually evolving the DIY slacker process, as always. I did find my snare sounded less like it was under a wet blanket when I moved the SM57 to the bottom side, stuff like that. I was using a Scarlett 6i6 for the last few years, I picked up a cheaper UMC404HD by Behringer, but it has four inputs on the front, little adjustments like that for ease of use in a cramped space. It's fun!

I'll be back to keep listening! Your tracks are a treat, man, I love your sound.
[avatar]
Hello there to you as well! I hope your FAWM is going well so far (by the track count so far, it looks like you are a winner!). I hope you are accomplishing what you wanted to accomplish this year, and as always feel free to ping me if you have something you'd want to collab on, (or need a save on for one that is teetering near completion). I'm gonna take a listen to a few more 'Coop songs of the Guate and Ze variety (maybe even Sr.) this morning, after I pay back some comments. Keep rocking, dude
[avatar]
Thx you for your very kind comments which are always encouraging and thoughtful. I do enjoy the tunes you write with your brother and it's obvious you play off each other and that's cool.
[avatar]
Thank you! Yes the band did cool stuff
[avatar]
OMG thanks for all of the amazing, encouraging and complimentary comments! Big emotional lift felt, cheers Rob!!!!
[avatar]
thanks for all the listens/comments! so behind with commenting but i will be back!
[avatar]
Congratulations on your FAWM win! 🎉
[avatar]
You’re welcome and I’ll have a go at recording something tonight!
[avatar]
Thanks for explaining! I never saw that technique but it explains a lot.

I'm glad that my computer arrived two days (!) before FAWM, so the first week has been a mess in between moving back ups, organising stems and testing my new interface. I wasn't able to mount my condensor microphone, hit the wall with playing guitar, so I did a lot with my keyboard. Still my FAWM was very limited. I only signed in for a few challenges and two collabs I promissed. After that, I laid down my pen for songwriting and cancelled my guitar lessons. And probably will for a few months. I will upload the outcome of the collabs but that's it. Didn't aim for the 14 and probably won't reach them.
[avatar]
Hello there! Ha yes I was thinking about that the other day.. Definitely one of the more random collabs I’ve done (I’ve shamefully probably only done about one every year). Not sure what possessed me to sing like that, probably inspired by your unique music! Anyway, hope you’re well and thanks for your continued comments.
[avatar]
Thanks for the comment Rob, it’s not my usual style I guess but I’ve been trying a different approach to writing this year, almost all the songs started in GarageBand iPhone app as midi projects, I make the sketches on public transport and export the midi files into my DAW and fine tune them and record stuff there, in an attempt to try to avoid some of my own cliches.

Btw in case you’re wondering I’ve been holding off bass for the video collab until there’s some drums, I thought what i recorded to just your guitar ended up sounding boring and uninspiring…
[avatar]
Thanks so much for listening and commenting on my recent songs! Really appreciate it!

I have a annual ritual of binding all my lyrics annually- I collect all my ideas to work on in February. It’s great excitement and I always run out of time! Tomorrow and eventually never comes But I am just forever impatient
[avatar]
Cheers Rob . Forgot to mention the start has a manic unintentional guitar sound but yeah the ocean coukd have been on the end , and guess what ? It’s right here 🌊😂
[avatar]
thank you @guatecoop for your kind comments, they lift me up!
[avatar]
Thanks so much for your beautiful comments on Restless - so glad you enjoyed it!
[avatar]
thank you for your listen and kind comment, and i'm glad you enjoyed my track
[avatar]
Hey Rob, I shared the song. I hope you like what I with it, thanks always for sharing your music with me.
[avatar]
Thanks for the kind thoughts. Vocals are off the table, but I am well enough today to handle keys. So, good to go.
[avatar]
LOL! I guess in the realm of all possibilities, that is a possibility. Anyway, it’s great to be matched up! Looking forward to a lot of fun.
[avatar]
😬😂❤️
[avatar]
Thank you for the comment on Dive Into You. I was telling Helen before FAWM how I really love those old funk songs....and R&B, and soul and Motown. And so when FAWM started she surprised me with that cool bass and drum track. Was great to be able to sing and play to such a cool, old school track.
[avatar]
I really like the Behringer Odyssey I have (clone of the Arp Odyssey from the 70's, with an added step sequencer and simple FX unit) and the RD-8 which is their clone of the classic Roland TR-808 hip-hop/techno staple. I'm looking at the Poly-D (Minimoog clone with extra oscillator and paraphonic mode) next... You'll laugh at my acoustic guitar recording technique I used...I have a pair of Audix i5 dynamic mics on a stereo bar in an XY pattern I usually use for the Leslie (slight distance miking)... one day instead of setting up condensers I just grabbed that and dragged it by the computer just to work quickly and found with some gain and a little treble lift it sounded great! I just move the guitar around until it sounds good in the cans and off I go. Some gentle compression, a little reverb, and voilá ! ;)
[avatar]
Hi there, I think I may have won spintunes the previous year but I have been too slack to update my profile page this year (slaps hand). Hope you and your family are well. Bring on the tunes!
[avatar]
HellOO! Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. Looking forward to some listening.
[avatar]
Hi! I think I'm FAWMing this year... playing it by ear. Nice to see you back!
[avatar]
Yes Group 11! Excited to be collaborating with you again Rob!
[avatar]
Looks like we’re fellow members of “Group 11” for the Digital 4 Tracks! Looking forward to working together!
[avatar]
Looking forward to FAWM, especially partnering with you on the video challenge!
[avatar]
Hello there. Goodness gracious you’ve got half of FAWM on your soundboard queueing up to say hello. I feel rather insignificant, but thank you for the ‘Serene and beautiful’ epithet, that made me smile hugely.
Have a great FAWM.
[avatar]
It was dicey! Been battling the black dog something chronic lately.
[avatar]
Hi Rob!!! I hope you have an amazing FAWM this year!!!! Rock out.
[avatar]
Wishing you a great FAWM! I'm eager to hear what you come up with!
[avatar]
Hey! Hope you have a good one too 😊
[avatar]
Heh...I'd settle for a mediocre one! 😄 Not from you, of course! 😂
[avatar]
Hey Rob, glad to see you back! Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Have a lovely FAWM!
[avatar]
Sounds like fun. How and in what format are files sent. I have used Dropbox for this and it works well.
[avatar]
Not sure how the ping pong collab works but I'm game to give it a try.
[avatar]
Thanks for the link! I've signed up for a tape!
[avatar]
Yes, man, great to see you back here again, Rob. I had the pleasure to meet your brother John when he came by to Maryland for the memorial for Eric Agner (Standup), so we got to chat a good bit. I learned that we are also apparently Honda Fit buddies, so good on that! Feel free to tag me if it comes down to it for another save on anything. Looking forward to hearing what you put together this year, and to another excellent February.
[avatar]
Likewise! I'm looking forward to some lovely grooves from you, maestro!
[avatar]
Good to see you back! Let’s go!
[avatar]
Happy FAWMing Rob!
[avatar]
The WP has a bit of learning curve I think, and I’m not sure I could recommend it, IMHO it’s not as intuitive and easy to just dive into making music with as the Minilogue, I would rather recommend the Arturia MicroFreak as a companion to the XD in the future, a fun feature packed synth
[avatar]
Good to see you here again.
[avatar]
Here we go again! Have yourself a great FAWM.
[avatar]
So do you think that Saturday at 4 pm would be a decent time for a FAWM Kumospace gathering? It's just hard to do it in advance with the weekend gone. Wish I had planned it in advance, but thanks for reminding me of it. I guess it's a tradition now!
[avatar]
Yes, a ping pong collab sounds intriguing!
[avatar]
Hello, nice to hear from you. I can't believe FAWM is almost here again! We moved a couple of months ago and my studio situation is much more limited in the new space. I anticipate a more scaled down process this year, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm looking forward to participating in the 4-track challenge again this year. Also looking forward to hearing all of the creative output FAWM produces. Maybe we can do a collab this year?
[avatar]
yeah I bought the cre8audio West Pest, always been intrigued by west coast synthesis and the WP or the MakeNoise O-Coast seemed like the most affordable entry points, and came over a very good deal on a WP. While I have several traditional east coast style analog synths (Moog, Korg, Roland) and known my way around them, it’s still confusing and occasionally frustrating to make sounds on the WP 😅
[avatar]
Hello! Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
Yeah... still in Germany. For now. Things have been up and down, but I'm doing by best to be make this a better year than the last. Really starting to feel excited for the music. :)
[avatar]
My pleasure, Rob - glad to hear you've tracked down what the problem was. Happy FAWMing!
[avatar]
Hey hey hey!
[avatar]
Happy FAWM, Rob!
[avatar]
I really appreciate it, but I'm going to use my 4-track Tascam portastudio and mix down to Reaper to finalize and convert. Keep it simple.
[avatar]
So glad you have more time for FAWM this year! Have an awesome FAWM Rob!
[avatar]
Hello! I appreciate the offer for help with Reaper and believe me I've used different DAWs for over 25 years starting with Cakewalk in the mid 90s. It's more that I find the computer a distraction nowadays than anything else and being a minimalist fits my brain better these days. Thanks again
[avatar]
Have a great FAWM Rob
[avatar]
Thank you, Rob.
Life keeps throwing stuff at us, but we keep batting it into the long grass. 😄
[avatar]
hi Rob, good to see you too! I really enjoyed last year. Have a good one!
[avatar]
hi, Rob! Hope you have a FAWMtastic 2024! ♫⋆。♪ ₊˚♬ ゚
[avatar]
Hey Freak!
[avatar]
Hi Rob!
So good to see you here again. 😃
[avatar]
Yes, I think I need to do a Kumospace gathering!
[avatar]
Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
And a fruitful and satisfying FAWM to you, Rob!
[avatar]
Happy FAWM 2024 :)
[avatar]
Good Morning Rob, I hope you and your family are doing well and I look forward to hearing your music again this year.
[avatar]
Oh, likewise! These few pre-FAWM days are like the best gang in the world all getting back together again and saying whassup. I hope you have an amazing February! 😁
[avatar]
Thanks mate. You too. I’m starting to feel those creative urges and trying to keep them at bay for 4 more days. ☺️
[avatar]
happy FAWM Rob!
[avatar]
Hey dere, Happy FAWM!
[avatar]
FAWM on!
[avatar]
Looking forward to hearing and have a great FAWM!
[avatar]
Guate’s going on dude! (Does that work as a greeting?) Good to see you in these parts once again :)
[avatar]
Hey -- good to see you too! I'll try to jump onto the next Zoom to say hello to everyone.
[avatar]
Yessss! Great to see you! I'm shooting for the full 14 this year, fingers crossed!
