Brother, Hold On

Liner Notes

War is always a tricky subject

I am old enough to remember when the right were the war mongering pigs and the left were marching in the street against the carnage. How times have changed.

Are there just wars? This song is loosely based on the American Civil War, particularly brutal conflict as all Civil Wars tend to be, pitching brothers against brothers. I would say the American Civil War was a just war given what was being fought for.

But what about Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan and more controversially Ukraine? So much money is now made from the business of war. And it is a business, that the people who start and perpetuate these wars have a vested financial interest in those wars with not much of a personal stake.

Stalin lost a son in WW2, Roosevelt a son in WW1. Washington’s adopted sons fought in the War of Independence, Robert E Lee, Napoleon and Churchill had sons who fought in their Wars.

John McCain’s son Jimmy served in Iraq but he is the exception in modern times. Joe Biden thinks his son died in war but did not, doesn’t stop him constantly claiming her did, but he did at least server, even if not in combat. Trump or his sons never served, same for Starmer, et al. To be fair to Trump he certainly seems to have anti-war policies but I guess we will see what he does in office.

Did you know famous recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Barak Obama actually dropped more bombs than George W Bush and at one point actually ran out of bombs.

The new secddef in the US server in combat and that is a good thing in my mind than a desk bound general. Saying that Eisenhower never saw combat but was a Great War leader.

Complicated isn’t it?

Modern wars are always wrapped in a thin veneer of morality for the consumption of the masses but the war mongering leader themselves almost always have their noses on the snouts. They don’t fight themselves, their families don’t fight, they have no skin in the game other than the money.

Lyrics

Title: “Brother, Hold On”
(A Slow Rock Ballad of a Civil War Soldier)

[Verse 1]
The morning sun cuts through the haze,
Marching boots on roads of clay,
Letters from home pressed to my chest,
A love I swore that I would not forget.

The drummer boy beats out our fate,
Cannons roar, but it is far too late,
Through fields of blue and gray we run,
Praying God will see us home.

Tell my love I fought so true,
But war don’t care for me or you,
One last breath and one last stand,
Dying in this no man’s land.

[Chorus]
Brother, hold on, don’t close your eyes,
The battle rages, but we will survive,
Through the smoke and fire we run, and hear the plaintive cries,
Brother, hold on, you’re not alone tonight.

The drummer boy beats out our fate,
Cannons roar, but it is far too late,
Through fields of blue and gray we run,
Praying God will see us home.

Tell my love I fought so true,
But war don’t care for me or you,
One last breath and one last stand,
Dying in this no man’s land.

[Chorus]
Brother, hold on, don’t close your eyes,
The battle rages, but we will survive,
Through the smoke and fire we run, and hear the plaintive cries,
Brother, hold on, you’re not alone tonight. (2)

I hope we can end wars at one point in time. Terrible destruction... But this song is quite the opposite: like it!

Wow what a classic song to start off with. Perfectly written musically to fit such well thought out topic. I hear you loud and clear and the power of the message with the beautiful soaring verse and chorus really grabbed me. Wow i can't wait to hear more

Very powerful rock ballad about war! Superb performance with a strong melody and lyrics that correctly point out the horrors of war. Nice work!

Another “fun” fact, embalming bodies and the funeral business at large were created during the civil war as a way to get bodies home for burial. After the war the people that had created this new craft decided to keep it going and make that money…it is wholly unnecessary just a hangover from a war before refrigerated box cars.

Anywhoooo….this came out lovely. The strings and the guitar tone are lovely. Nice one!

The production value is amazing here! The lyrics are perfect to bring us in! Unfortunately war never seems to be very far away. I am hopeful that we could be moving away from it. At least from the larger scale ones on the news shortly. Will say, I don't know the in's and out's of how people in Ireland are feeling but from the outside seeing a new level of peace these last few years is great!

This is passionately expressive and wonderfully produced and yay to the guitar solo well done

The 'verb (and whatever all else) on the vocals - and their spacing is wonderful. A dreamy quality to brutal subject matter. I enjoy the juxtaposition of that.

Echoing what Bill said about your passion and production. And I do believe things are complicated today. The best we can do IMO is vote and search out a plan to attain/maintain good mental health.

i love the passion in your vocals and production. the drum part brings it all home. a moving inside-the-head portrait of a soldier at the end of his own losing battle. i disagree with your liner note that this war of northern aggression was justified. it was a massacre of innocent people living in states that dared to secede from the union, and when it was over, the northern armies marched to the west and began their slaughter of the native americans. i dont know if your soldier was from the northern offensive or the southern defensive, but it doesnt matter. it is the same for all soldiers on whatever side they are on. they are not fighting for their country. they are fighting for their lives. and every soldier who does not return home has lost the war.

I love war songs and they are, sadly, so relevant to what's going on in the world at the moment! This song is really good. Love everything about it but the chorus in particular is excellent - those last 2 lines!

Strong lyrics and great subtle music.
Less war means less pain.
More songs means more Joy.
