Liner Notes

Song finished shortly after the skirmish ended, but it took me awhile to record! Marked NFSW because of one bad word. 😂

The #skirmish prompt was:
What would you do with a time machine?

I'm playing my Enya Nova U Mini (soprano #uke) because that was the most convenient to start writing with this morning, and I recorded with it as well.

Recorded on my phone using the High-Q app. Stupid phone refused to let me upload the song, so I just had to send it to myself and post with my laptop lol.

Also, my voice is still recovering from having bronchitis last month. So vexing.

Lyrics

Hindsight

F Am G Em
If life's supposed to be messy
I have done a bang-up job
Not the best in my class
But surely near the top
It's a quiet kind of failure
That from outside looks sort of fine
I shove it down and show a smile
But I'm still cringing inside

Am F G Dm, Am C G -
So many times in my life
When I needed some advice
I always tried to weigh my options and choose wisely
Sometimes the slightest foolish move
Disastrous would prove
But if I'd known my crucial turning points precisely

C Am F Dm (2x), G
Maybe if I could find a way
(Even if fairly cliché)
To go back and somehow warn myself with hindsight
Selfless others surely would
Use this method for greater good
Let's just say that I would practice first on my life
And then we'll see...

F Am G Em
I like to imagine that
In an alternate reality
I turned out somehow superior
Whether by whim or practicality
I'm not looking for extremes
But less fucked up would be great
Less regret in my life
Less worry on my plate

Pre-Cho:

Cho:

Em G D F, C - Am G
In a world of "what-ifs"
Premonition is a gift
But not one I've possessed
You can say it's for the best
But glance around at my peers
I'm the fruition of my fears
In comparison

This is a lot of fun… Despite the simple uke in the background, I get the feeling with words used. It could almost be a song in a musical… Really love the meter and feel of stanza… Another great one!

Fun to play on the piano!

Great message! Nice chorus!

Wow. This does feel very much like a musical centerpiece song, I agree with that comment. You sing it with this lovely bittersweet tone, and it adds a lot of gravitas to the meaning. Lots of effective lines while still keeping it mostly conversational - that's hard to do. And for what it's worth, the vocal turned out great.

Such relatable lyrics, ‘I’m not looking for extremes but less fucked up would be great’ is perfect.

Your voice is beautiful, bronchitis notwithstanding! Great lyrics- especially liked "Premonition is a gift...but not one I've possessed"...and the ending "we'll see!"

Ok... this is killer. I love this. I'm so very "play by ear" that you sharing the chord progressions actually helps gives me a little extra insight to your writing process and helps change how I'm viewing my own process. So thanks for that.

Anyways, back to the song. I love the lyrics, very relatable and clever.Your singing is... well... I'm envious if I'm being entirely honest. I wouldn't worry about the recovery. You were very listenable-to.

Thanks for your warm welcome! I think your voice sounds magnificent, esp like the chorus melody. The line "I'm the fruition of my fears" is brilliant. And for the record, I think fucked is a great word 😁

Brilliant! I can totally hear this in a musical… or at least delivered on a darkened stage illuminated by a spotlight. Really great lyrics and delivery!

omg i love these lyrics, i definitely relate to cringing at my past mistakes with hindsight haha. fun tune! 😄

Some excellent lines here. Wonderful delivery as well. Love the emotion and vocals.

This is fabulous! I love how it starts! There is a wonderful sense of intimacy and insight! Beautiful delivery! Gorgeous melody and vocals and great message!

Wow, Robin - For me this one felt like the musings of a singer who has gotten through life with a combination of denial and looking on the bright side as she opens up a little to the abyss of true feelings. So much truth-telling inside the ukelele bound musical theater frame. This feels like exactly what skirmishes can open up - saying real things in a hurry before the editors have time to shut us down. Happy Hosting!

I love your emotion and ryhmes, and the honesty bleeding through in your words. I often find myself thinking about this topic, but I try to look forward.

At least our past experiences helped form us into who we are, having fun sharing our songs with friends online. :)

Really great start! I also commend you for your Uke playing, it was very nice.

Oh man what a first line. And there's more:

"It's a quiet kind of failure
That from outside looks sort of fine"

I really feel this deeply. What an awesome song Robin!
