True Life

by @ayais

Liner Notes

Last of four written (and recorded) since 50/90. Now to move on.

This comes near the end of a musical called The Worm. A present couple are able to communicate in a primitive fashion with Tilla and Crow in the future. Tilla turns out to be their descendant. The only way to 'talk' is through text from future to present, or leaving things in a time capsule from present to future.

In the present, the billionaire who is funding the project and an administrator come back into the lab. Joe punches the billionaire in the nose to stand up for June, and Joe and June are starting to think about their exit strategy.

Tilla and Crow - in the future - tire of looking to a computer for companionship, and sing this song. They are glad to have 'met' their ancestors. Everyone has grown some, and all are looking at continuing their separate futures as two couples.

Lyrics

We look
Into a box
That is not a person

We wait
For the box
To make life real

We think
That the box
Has true meaning

What has meaning
Is a true life
And that box is not true

We’ll leave that little box
Go into the light
To solve this mystery

We’ll start a new life
Better than
This darkness

We’ll find a true life
Climb to the surface
No box needed to find the truth

Beautiful melody, and I love the organ and piano. Lovely guitar solo!

Interesting story in the musical. The music here is engaging and it’s a good message. I like how you explore climbing to the surface to find the truth. Good one.

I don't know why that song has such a relaxing effect on me; the harmonies are exquisite, the vocal tone is wonderful, that guitar/piano work, wow! And then there are the lyrics and the powerful message they so elegantly convey... Brilliant, thank you.

I also like the interplay between guitars and piano! And the simple truth of the text :-)

Another gem, and a song for the times - I like the simple logic reasoning of your character, and you deliver their thoughts gently and profoundly

I love it how you build your lyrics up! Those short verses are really good!
As a woman with an toxic relationship with my mobile i can relate to this very much!
Guitar work is fantastic as usually!

The interplay between the piano and guitar is winsome. The song's discussion about technology's hold on us works outside the context of your musical, too.

i can relate to this int wo ways. first, i knew my wife for six years on the web before meeting her in the flesh. second, my daughter is addicted to her telephone and on spend all day talking to her friends there. so there is no way i could be indifferent this song. it will vibrate with people even outside of the context of the play.
