Over You

Liner Notes

#rock #BigStar #breakup #CheatersDozen

Another entry in my Cheater's Dozen, I've had this one rattling around since September '23. It started as a fairly intentional attempt to rip off Big Star (literally, my Ableton file is "big star ripoff.als"), and tonight I decided that I was actually OK with that, and that Alex Chilton won't mind.

I'm not a very strong guitarist, so a lot of the guitar track is cut & pasted rather than me trying to play it well all the way through. It's also why there's a key solo and not a guitar solo.

I like this one, I think the harmonies are nice, even though the vocals are basically scratch demo takes. It's sung from the POV of a guy who is *definitely* over someone. Definitely.

Lyrics

we stayed too long, now the party's over
and everyone has left but you
you're talking to an empty corner
i'm talking to an empty you

oh it's all or nothing
oh i guess that's nothing new
oh your game is over
oh and I'm over you

i'm tied in knots that i can't get over
the end is nigh but it's none too soon
if you were here i would rake you over
but you and i are an empty room

oh you never told me
oh how to talk to you
oh my words are empty
oh and I'm empty too

oh it's all or nothing
oh i guess i'm nothing too
oh your game is over
oh and I'm over you

Awesome. I couldn't resist a Big Star tag. This has dreamy quality, and that bass just envelopes the ears so nicely. It builds well and the keys are a really nice touch. Your voice sounds great.

Oh shit, these are amazing lyrics. I know I'm just repeating what others have said but "you're talking to an empty corner / i'm talking to an empty you ".... DAMN. I love the way this unfolds, it's lush and spacious and it takes its time.

Definitely hear the Big Star vibe, particularly in the vocals. Nice performance!

First verse is a killer, where would the world's greatest hits be without relationship breakdowns. Love the driving guitar and great vocals 😎

“you’re talking to an empty corner/im talking to an empty you” oh my goodness

I couldn't resist something tagged #BigStar, but this stands strong on its own! I love the bass line that comes in on "your game is over" and then the guitar on the next verse. In fact, all the instrumentation is great. Fab lyrics too – my favorite line is "i'm talking to an empty you".

This quickly and pleasantly builds into something big (pun actually not intended). Just love how simple yet meaningful your lyrics are. This rocks - "you're talking to an empty corner
i'm talking to an empty you."

Beautiful song, singing and playing. Your vocals are gorgeous. Very strong, powerful and polished song. Love it.

"you and i are an empty room" is some gangsta shit. Dude's over her like I'm over carbohydrates. Vibe here is really strong, like something we'd throw on a mix tape right before a Matthew Sweet tune. Rawk!

I love how one and long sound as a rhyme. The melancholy of your melody is blissful. This is a great song. I really appreciate how you have different instruments/parts come in -- it all supports your excellent song <3

The keys give it a nice aughts-teens David Holmes touch. Top marks!

Love the fuzz. This is like some straight up Matthew Sweet / Gin Blossoms type vibes.

Jordan, you really knocked this out of the park! The arrangement is great, good sounds, the mix is nice. Cool synths sound in the solo. Let me know when it's finished, it's definitely a download for me!

I think I'm on my fifth listen now, and it just keeps getting better. I miss the days when we could download songs.

Many years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing Alex Chilton play in Jackson, MS. At the end of the night, as he walked off stage, I mock cried "Come back, Alex! We love you!" He looked at me like I was a complete idiot, which I am.

Anyway, back in the day of cassettes, this would have been one of my pocket tapes. Great song! I've listened twice as of this comment, and plan at least a third.

Great vocals. Love the way the tune starts to build with the bass and then we go full on. Melody is very catchy and the lyrics are kinda heartbreaking. Great tune

Very Very Nice!
Sublime vocals ala Big Star (and you!).
The Guitar Crunch is Tasty.
Enjoyed the listen.

DEFINITELY over them. I love the empty lines, they’re so simple and mean so many different things in their different permutations. Harmonies are lovely!
