Where Idle Lies

by @hanley

Liner Notes

Had a bit of fun messing around with the Surge XT synth, which gave birth to the main keys line. I leaned into the dreamy feel and tried to keep things soft and warm.

Then yesterday I bought a book at the op shop (aka. thrift shop) called "How to be Idle". I often find it hard to slow down and allow my mind to rest. Ironically, it will likely take me years to get around to sitting and reading the book, but it was enough to flick through and conjur some thoughts about taking the foot off the accelerator a little more this year.

Lyrics

Held in a vice
Lions to tame,
Don't they know
you can't win every game
Wouldn't it be nice to be quiet as the night
How can you go wrong if you roll out of bed with a song?

When the sky is clear, and you have no fear
Just another soul who's forgotten,
no need to wait, for the fish to take the bait
the present day is already here

Where dreams will meet their maker,
shake the hands of giants in their slumber.
Driven by foolish desires
Seeking our own demise
This is where Idle lies
This is where Idle lies

An "aural hug" is exactly what this is. Beautiful.

How can you go wrong if you roll out of bed with a song. That could be a theme song for my FAWM experience, the best ones are always there when you wake up 😎 Synth and vocals are a treat

I love this, it's so warm and vibe-y, and I love the lyrical take, wouldn't it be nice to be quiet as the night? PLEASE TELL MY BRAIN because it's not. anyway! Love these synths and your vocals, this one is really nice

Well, this is like an aural hug! Your choice of synth patches is very tasteful and I like way the percussion is so minimalist.

Hell yeah, the sound of the vocals and synth together is so lush. Really clear rhythm in the melody, I love how sharp your vocals are, yet understated - and the build into the chorus is so nice, those string melodies just gooo

Oh that was short. For reason I think synth songs by default have to be at least 3 minutes. Not sure why your voice sounds completely different to what I was expecting or remember but there’s a thick and intimate tonal quality about it.

There’s some genuinely beautiful sounding synth samples here. Being expertly played too. Love the layered vocals, and the whole thing IS exceptionally warm and clean. Love the phrase ‘this is where idle lies’. Nice!

Bloody hell mate. This is a classy classy tune. Great soundscape, crystal vocals, thoughtful words, the thing evolves. The strings entering is a moment.

Really enjoyed this one. That FM synth sounds great and provides a solid base for the track. The build is reallyyu well judged and satisfying. Great to hear your voice again too! Good stuff once more 😊

I do like this FM synth you've got going on here. Is it all Surge or just the gloriously warm main chonk chords?

It a funny thing, but every year I am surprised by your singing voice. Like, that's never the Hanster. Oh wait it IS!

You'd think I'd know by now, this is my 14th.

It is indeed soft and warm. It’s so wonderfully comfortable to listen to in fact that I’ve gone in for the immediate relisten. I bloody love it dude! In fact I’m probably gonna loop it for the rest of my lunch hour ❤️

Let me know if you find 'How to stop being bone idle', I could do with reading it asap! This is gorgeous, that Surge patch is really lovely and I love the slow opening of the filter as the arrangement builds around it, such a great production. The synthetic paired with orchestral works really nicely towards the end there.

Lovely vibe, synth sounds nice, I really like the title lyric, almost sounds like "idolize" which makes it super interesting.

How to be idle.. impossible during FAWM haha! I love this dreamy journey you’ve created which gradually opens up into a lush soundscape. I’m in awe of your ability to build layers so effortlessly!

Ooh, the way the arrangement builds is ace. Love how your voice merges into that synth line at the end of the first verse. Beautiful stuff.
