Green Fields

Liner Notes

I've been wanting to try my hand at power metal, so I attempted a song in the style of Orden Ogan. I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

I forget where the key line (The fields are greenest where the dead lie) came from. A book, I think? But I based the song around it. It's dark, but there's a hint of optimism in there, no? Even fatal struggle yields life, eventually.

Lyrics

The fields lay quiet and still
The ravens are shrouding the tree on the hill
Our tears are for us, the buried have none
For we’re the ones who must keep moving on

In their final days they stood tall and proud
With a chill in the air but sweat on their brow
They fought the battle that had to be won
And still the darkness swept on

The fields are greenest where the dead lie
Our grief is no burden for those who have died
They had no chance to grow old
And though the comfort is cold
The fields are greenest where the dead lie

Deep in our bones we all know
The darkness in men continues to grow
And we can but hope that we’re up to the task
We’ll answer the call that no one can ask

The fields are greenest where the dead lie
Our grief is no burden for those who have died
They had no chance to grow old
And though the comfort is cold
The fields are greenest where the dead lie

If there’s to be any hope
We’re the ones who must stand
Though their battle has ended
We have our commands

The fields are greenest where the dead lie
Our grief is no burden for those who have died
They had no chance to grow old
And though the comfort is cold
The fields are greenest where the dead lie
The fields are greenest where the dead lie

"The fields are greenest where the dead lie" is such a great line. Superb metal lyrics. The vocals have a bit of a Celtic feel to me, which is meant as a compliment. A lovely performance, it is quite moving.

I think Where The Die Lie should be the title too. It grabs the Hell out of you! The lyrics really invoke a lot of thought. The harmonies are nice. They make the feel even darker. Edgar Allen Poe would be proud of you!

Once again, your lyric grabbed me. I loved the somewhat creepy observance: "The fields are greenest where the dead lie." I think Where The Die Lie would be a good title! The V+M seems just right for this message.

Hey, so firstly thank you for spending so much time with my song (The Knot...) and for your amazing feedback. I agree that I could do with something stronger chordally in the second half of the break. I put that whole bichord sequence change in as an afterthought actually, and didn't spend long on it at all, or in fact on the harmonies. Sometimes those elements that come together last minute are the best!
Now for this one. I am not usually a rock/metal fan but this is great. I would just as happily hear is as an a cappella 3 part vocal - gorgeous stuff!
Hope you're enjoying your first FAWM as much as me.

This is fine stuff. Never heard of OO but I reckon they must be influenced by Led Zep. The vocal melody could work as a folk song. Great harmonies. Excellent guitar work. Really love this and it's not my usual genre at all. Nor is folk, by the way!

OK you guys! I updated the mix with louder drums! There are definitely some issues with the performance that @jeremykazoo notes. For me it takes a while to build up enough familiarity with a new melody to really dig in and go for it, so it's definitely a challenge in these tight timelines. But it's something for me to watch out for, for sure.

The vocal harmonies over the metal are cool. Unfamiliar with OO, but need to check them out after hearing this. I agree with @nadine that the drums feel a little buried.

I definitely hear the OO in this! Love the vocal harmonies

Yes, this is definitely proper power metal! Great lyrics, and they fit the style nicely. Very cool riffing here. Metal!

I never heard of Orden Ogan but I hear the power metal here. Good melodies, good tempo changes. Pump up the drums!

🤘Heck yes, finally some heavy stuff! The line "The fields are greenest where the dead lie" brings the old open "In Flander's Field" to mind. There's a little hesitation to the performance but I bet with a bit of production this song would melt faces.

Really like the harmony work at the very end.
