Liner Notes

#dadgad #alternatetuning #odd this strange little experiment in DADGAD tuning came from a clip I saw of Neil deGrasse Tyson talking about a phenomenon called "Earthshine". Hopefully it ends on a somewhat positive note, too, which we all could use these days....

fast iPhone recording, imported into garageband in my iphone with a little echo and compression and reverb added....

Lyrics

See the crescent moon, you can dimly see an outline
Of the rest of the moon, barely glowing, almost crystalline
Earthshine, baby, that’s earthshine

The sun’s light shines on earth’s continents and oceans
Reflecting to the moon then back to us to complete the motion
Earthshine, baby, earthshine

Light twice reflected is three times a charm
Some say if you see it, you won’t come to any harm

There are natural phenomena that come almost never
Eclipses and crazy storms, crazy weather
But earthshine’s once a month, baby, earthshine

So as we think of the doom and disasters that we’ve made
How the best of human history might one day fade
Think of earthshine, baby, earthshine
Shining on and on and on and on and on….

Such a soothing chord progression in DADGAD and the melody does as well. It always helps me to reflect on the universe.

Thanks for teaching me about Earthshine! I think you had the Earth vibrating in time with that guitar sound.

What a great subject to write about and I like the guitar a lot (again.) That rise in chords and melody on the "Light twice..." lines are great.

Can't go wrong with DADGAD! Great science tune...an antidote to ignorance! Cool!

ive heard this tuning before. i think tim buckley used it at least once. you make good music with it too. a rewarding change of pace with some soothing melodies running through those changes.

This is some good dadgad! Love the melody on the earthshine hook. I for one liked the more conversational style to the lyric. Nicely done!

Dadgad is always interesting to me! I can’t help hear nick drake on the first few notes! Works well! Nice melody!

Really enjoyed the chord you hit when you sing “Earthshine”. It’s a nice little twist I didn’t expect it from the start of the verse and intro. Watch out open tunings are addictive and so much fun like @darrylgregory mentioned. Dig the subject matter too. Great one Mike!

DADGAD is so fun to play in - it’s got that oomph with the low D and octave. Try to take more advantage of the upper neck in this tuning while playing the low D as a drone.

Watch out for lyrical shoehorning - come up with words that fit the rhythm you establish for the line/melody. I chant my lyrics to the rhythm to make sure that they fit and are easy to say. I’ve covered a lot of Springsteen and he does this too - (drives me crazy to try to sing it).

That said, I really like what you are saying! It’s a soothing melody over the guitar pattern and sung well.
