Where You Reside

Liner Notes

Lately our 5 year old daughter Juni has been struggling with a fear of spiders, particularly of the Hunstman variety, as they're bigger, hairier and hence scarier. It started as being scared of seeing them, but now it's led to nightmares and imagining seeing them in the dark. As a result, I've regularly been removing the harmless spiders from our cathedral ceiling corners, to alleviate screams and panic. It's curious, as she hasn't had any particular traumatic experience with them, but I appreciate that arachnophobia is a reality for many individuals so it can't easily be dismissed.
I've attempted to channel her perspective, although I'm sure she likely wouldn't use the same vernacular. However, she does call the spiders 'Husbands' not Huntsmans!

The clicky beats and droney thing (in the intro) were sampled (on the Koala Sampling app - highly recommended!) from an infusion treatment I started last year. I liked the rhythmic element to it, and then it spawned the piano riffs, most of which were conceived pre FAWM.

Lyrics

Fear is running red,
crawling up my leg,
I can't even sleep safely in my bed

caught up in your web,
circling through my head,
Time to kick you out, don't care if you wind up dead,

Who will decide, where you reside?
run but you can't hide, from me or my daddy.

He might not have long legs
But climbs ladders on the regs,
Even if you beg, there's no mercy

Put you in a jar, carry you afar,
lay you down to rest where you can't hurt me

You don't decide, where you reside,
run but you can't hide from me, or my daddy.

I don't need a husband, and I don't need a friend,
Movies made you a hero, but I cannot pretend,
keeping at a distance, take the curds and whey,
anyway you spin it, fear inside remains

Maybe someday soon, we'll sing another tune,
find another path that we can pave,
Where thoughts cannot harm me, we'll live in harmony
You can teach me how I can be brave.

Oh God, this takes me back to my time living down-under. Let's just say I wasn't overly keen on huntsman either. Why are they always in the house? Aren't they too big to get in?!? 🙈

Anyway, this is great stuff. Some really cool melodic twists and turns (the step down to 'who will decide' had me audibly saying 'ooh yeah' 😆). The clicky percussion is really effective too. Great stuff once again!

Well, this is super smooth and I just love taking your daughter’s perspective for the lyrics. The combination of piano and chorus guitar is a definite win. You do great things with that sampler, as the beat is busy and interesting, yet the song flows with a head-bobbing smoothness. Excellent song!
Edit: Those spiders are Enormous!! I can understand her concern! My sons and wife would definitely be calling for me. Wow

Whoa, super groovy. You've somehow made huntsman spiders even sexier. Love the twangy switch-up section in the middle - excellent stuff.

Very nice chord and rhythm combo. Awesome timbres as always. Killing it.

This is fantastic. Heard this a few days ago and forgot to comment. I agree with Juni (beautiful name btw). Spiders are horrid. This has a lovely retro feel and that tap tap rhythm is really soothing. Actually the whole thing is soothing. Are you trying to get me to forgive spiders?

Wow firstly , love the almost sparseness but impact of the piano additions and that tickatKa beat is spiders all over . I love a production that leaves all that space for little musical interjections . Adore the guitar bits . By the way I used to be petrified of spiders , but since encountering various Karl head sized ones in Thailand , I now am rather keen on the 8 legged blighters 🤩🙏

Plus 1 for Koala. Very handy app.

I love how the skittering beats sound like little spiders running around - nice sound painting and the soulful melody lines are great with the guitar that sounds like a worn out tape.

This is the best song I’ve ever heard about spiders! Clever lyrics and a super groove as always. We get a few huntsmans/husbands here too and I always put them outside. Hope Juni grows out of her arachnophobia eventually 🤞🏻

yes, love the beats, but especially the piano and the harmony on the chorus. the break in the middle is pretty rad too. I hear you channeling Longstreth in the vocal runs...

Well if this ain’t the coolest thing I heard this FAWM I don’t know what is. Sadly the subject matter detracts, I can’t even read the lyrics as soon as I heard ‘crawling up my leg’. I’ve never thought about being an arachnophobe in Aus before!! I thought we had it bad here with our 1 inch fiends!!
Anyway, enough spider chat. I love this so much, it’s giving me David Longstreth/Dirty projectors vibes and he’s just about my favourite musician in the whole world so yahhh, I’m a fan (if it wasn’t about spiders) 😝

Ooo that percussive projector (?) loop is such a cool idea. Just an expert arrangement and production, the old-timey piano mixed with the contemporary beat is dreamy. The beat switch at 1:40 is absolutely killer, love how you retain the vibe with mostly brand new sounds. We saw huntsman spiders in Thailand as part of a cave tour and I would NOT want one of those in my house thanks very much. If I did a song about my reaction to them, it'd be more "Leaving on a jet plane" than "put you in a jar" 😏 Though saying that, since going vegan I've become far less scared of spiders generally.

Mmmm, soulful chorus.
I still have to kill (or like you, preferably remove where possible) every spider that appears in the house because my 50+ year old other half is manically scared of them. Fortunately we don't have those big hairy mofos you have
