Bathysphere

by @dhiatt

Liner Notes

Not really about a bathysphere, but the word inspired the core idea of song: giving in to the pressures of the world (and water as a metaphor for it). Plus I thought it was an intriguing title.

Pretty straightforward song but struggled a bit with the vocals. Good practice though. Should probably have switched keys but I didn't feel like down tuning my 7 string (stupid floyd rose!) This is just drop D on a 6 string plus a 5 string bass (B standard).

Lyrics

Ten meters deep and I’m floating
Waves as still as the ocean floor
Beyond the forces keeping me up
This is my last stop

Push myself deeper
Forces drag me down

I’m sinking under the weight
Mountains of water all above
Starry black is all I see
Fall until this pressure crushes me

Drifting down now, nothing left to do
Give myself up to gravity
Bubbles drift away
And I do too

Letting go
Darkness drags me down

I’m sinking under the weight
Mountains of water all above
Starry black is all I see
Fall until this pressure crushes me

I’m already too deep
The only way out is to keep going down
It's too late for me
If I ascend the shock would kill me

I’m sinking under the weight
Mountains of water all above
Starry black is all I see
Fall until this pressure crushes me

Instantly catchy riffing here. Also enjoy the melodies!

I hear your vocal struggling. A third down would do some magic on the chorus, but then the verse would be hard (or an octave higher). The idea is good worth a rerecording.

Love the production and your different voices. Some very intriguing lyric lines: "The only way out is to keep going down." and "Starry black is all I see."

I can still hear the song after listening to it. Which means (to me) that the melody is memorable. I like everything about this. Definitely worth recording again. But the instrumentation and vocals are pretty good to my ears!

Yeah. 7s with a trem. 😬
I have two of them. I feel your pain!
Love the energy and the sense of threat of all that water...!

Probably worth trying in the other key, but definitely a keeper. Loving the lyric and the overall vibe.

I love the play between the arpeggiated guitar and the big chords. Your bridge lends itself to some big epic layered harmony vocals.
