Devil at my Door

by @spazsquatch · @dreamscuba

Liner Notes

Based off a poisonous plant prompt, which in my case was Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) a plant that to my initial disappointment seems like the "kid gloves" of deadly plants. Traditionally more common for medicinal use than murder, but there were things to work with.

For starters @leslie indicated it was "believed to be the plant shaken by the devil at the doors of those he wished to curse" which was certainly a fun image to play with. Then wikipedia turned me on to the fact that this would be at least the fifth song written about yarrow as it seems like the good folks in the UK fancied it a bit of a love potion and I have no shame in stealing "herb of Venus' tree" right from the old public domain.

As it started to come together I was getting a serious Blues Rock vibe and tapped @dreamscuba for help laying down a groove.

In the end I was able to play with the idea of moderation, and I still got some killing in, so all in all, a good time.

Simon says: Thank you @spazsquatch for the opportunity to collaborate. Lyrics, vocals and drums are spot on... and the organ just really makes this so much more!! Great song.

Lyrics

[Verse]
I spent my midnights, sippin' on sweet wine.
Tomorrow on the table, as payment for tonight.
Playing with the shadows living like a king
Revealing in a lifestyle, only dice could bring

Time of my life, and I never heard that knocking

[Verse]
Running through of the fields yarrow, wild and free
Indulging in the herb, of that Venus tree.
Wandering through the garden, and picking blossoms.
Planting seed, where ever I wanted.

Sounds of the night, drown out all the knocking

[Verse Solo]

[Verse]
Last call always came, before I had enough
Dancing with spirits when the band packed up
I couldn't take the quiet, so I went hunting
For any noise that could soothe my longing

Kept it loud enough, to block out all the knocking

[Verse]
The hands got cold, the beer got warm
I had less and less, but doubled down for more
Choose my wagers for the thrill and not the margin,
Convinced the only way to lose, was walking when you're down

I let it ride, and ignored all of the knocking

[Chorus]
Devil's at my door with a curse
I took all I could take, and I'll get what I deserve
A little goes a long way, it's the dose that makes the poison
If the Devil's comes a knockin'

[Chorus Solo]

[Verse]
Champagne elixir turned to bitter vinegar,
I still drank it, and ordered even more
Demon in the bottle, the only friend that calmed
I only knew one way, and that way wasn't stopping

Hair of the dog to quiet all the knocking

[Verse]
A suggestion on my shoulder said it's time to walk away,
Got hit with a final hand, finished out my game
Tossed into a gutter, bleeding in the dark
Watching as the glittered heavens, faded out

Next sound I heard was the knocking of an old friend.

[Chorus]
The Devil's at my door with a curse
I took all I could take, and I'll get what I deserve
A little goes a long way, it's the dose that made the poison
When the Devil's came a knockin'

[Chorus]
The Devil's at my door with a curse
I took all I could take, and I got what I deserve
A little goes a long way, it's the dose that made the poison
When the Devil's came a knockin'

What a great collab! Perfect voice for a bluesy rock song and I will look at the yarrow I grow with more respect.

Awesome groove and a great story! I really like how you've incorporated the Yarrow by identifiers more than by name.

A heck of a groove and an inner conflict as the foundation for the song. I like the thin logic that reveals character and strings the story together.

Rockin tune. I like the imagery of the devil knocking on the door.

Yay one of my favourite teams is back. So good to hear you two. I read about the challenge and couldn't imagine anything at all. Its the dose that makes the prison is a good line. You came up with great lyrics and the organ is giving the little extra touch. Definitely a keeper!

Please let me know when you two have an album out. I would listen to it!!

I love the progression of the knocking at the end of each verse. Descriptive lyrics of drinking and gambling tying the yarrow throughout so cleverly with the devil's knocking. Great job with the challenge!

I love that killer guitar paired with the synth organ. Great rock vocals. Wonderful story telling in the lyrics. Nice touch having the chorus lower in intensity and volume - it is almost like the devil is whispering. This is such a cool collab!

Well I'll bet on this rocker anytime, poison be damned. These lyrics are aces! Every line's a gem. You take us right there, clear as day, night and hungover!
Great groove, your voice is a force of nature. Really diggin' this all the way around.
