A few of weeks ago, I came to the realization that my teaching style is what one might call Sarcastically Obtuse. You see, by day I'm a Lifeguard & Swimming Instructor (for those who didn't know). But I also have a degree in Philosophy (you might see where I'm going with this…). One thing this world, & especially this younger generation, is lacking is Critical Thinking. So I try to make my students think for themselves as much as possible. For example, they are well aware of the pool rules - so when they ask me if they can do a certain thing (e.g. dive in the deep end), I NEVER give them a straight Yes/No answer. Instead, I ask them if they think they are allowed to dive in the deep end. I know one of these days one of my students is probably going to punch me. But if they can learn to think for themselves a little, then I will have taught them more than how to swim. And that would be awesome!

I started roughly throwing these lyrics together at work last week (àpropos, n'est-ce pas?). I found that they quickly turned political. I blame Doug Ford & Donald Trump. At any rate, I'm not quite satisfied with how this all came together. The song still needs some work, not only lyrically, but also musically. I did try to use my "Live" Jeskola Buzz setup a little more by creating (in real time as the tape rolled) both a Guitar & Bass loop (both played by my Strat). I certainly need more practice before this becomes smoother. Oh well…

Lyrics

Sarcastically Obtuse
==============

- VERSE 1 -

Trying to make you think
In a world that stinks
Don't you have your own dreams?
Don't you realize how things seem?

- CHORUS -

Your rhetorical questions are of no use
Because all my replies are sarcastically obtuse
My humour is often used to diffuse
A world that has become sarcastically obtuse

- VERSE 2 -

Your false Messiah feeds you lies
Built upon all that you despise
Which you swallow as you rise
Against the Truths you decry

- BRIDGE -

Put down this inserection
Give up all of your freedom
For the righteous shall ascend
Into the maverick's kingdom!

meh… good enough for FAWM. Gonna have to FAWM it…

Has a good edge to it, pointed words and sound both, the riff is full of feeling.

There are still people who rely on an instructor rather than on an app to learn how to swim, so REJOICE. 😀
From what my point of view, the musical approach here *is* sarcastic, and therefore appropriate. Your guitar kinds of moans there, which I like a lot. It's like there's a hidden message in addition to your lyrics: "Wake up, FFS!"

Hey, for a rough draft this is pretty great. Nice guitar melodies happening and some astute observations in those lyrics. Hah, I can think of a few teachers who did that and they were my favorites. Maybe this is the adult counterpart to the adolescent "Quiet and Angsty" 😉

Haha yeah, I have the same teaching style.
They used to just stare at me blankly most of the time, though.
And don't get me started on Doug "For Some People" Ford.
I'm liking how the instruments don't...quite...line...up.
Controlled confusion, love it.
I like the insistent sharp guitar, like intrusive thoughts.
Nice work.

I love this! The title instantly got my attention, and the first two lines kept it! I love the guitar wailing in the transitions. Very impactful!
