Liner Notes

I had a long train journey today back from a filk con. I should probably have been catching up on work, but my brain was in the wrong place so I wrote some lyrics instead. This is only slightly autobiographical, because I like my job, and if I'm up that late, it's probably decaf not a dram :). I'm still likely to be being distracted by doomscrolling or another chapter though.

Anyway. I suppose it's a #ukulele #folk song about the daily grind. Live from the sofa, where I might (but probably shouldn't) still be at 1am. #fuc

(Self criticism: I don't like that "morning" is used in two different ways. Meh. I'll find a way to fix it later.

Update: I've found a possible way to fix it now but I'm not redoing the demo :). I'll just tweak the lyrics...)

Lyrics

[A][C#m]
[D][E][Esus][E]

It's [A]one o'clock in the [C#m]morning
There [D]isn't a sight to be [E]seen
[A]One o'clock in the [C#m]morning
[D]Except for the glow of the [E]screen

[D]One o'clock in the [A]morning
[D]Eyes are heavy as [E]lead
[A]One o'clock in the [C#m]morning
But I'm [D]not going to go to my [E]bed[Esus][E]

It [F#m]only makes dawn come [A]sooner
When it's [D]time to head out in the [E]cold
[A]Day after day the [D]same old routine
Per[A]haps has be[E]gun to get [A]old

[A][C#m]
[D][E][Esus][E]

[A]One o'clock in the [C#m]morning
The [D]radio quietly [E]sings
[A]One o'clock in the [C#m]morning
[D]Sweet wrappers lining the [E]bin

[D]One o'clock in the [A]morning
[D]Coffee is still in the [E]pot
[A]One o'clock in the [C#m]morning
A [D]dram as likely as [E]not[Esus][E]

The [F#m]clock chimes another half [A]hour
Till it's [D]time to behave as I'm [E]told
[A]Day after day the [D]same old routine
Per[A]haps has be[E]gun to get [A]old

[A][C#m]
[D][E]
[A][C#m]
[D][E]

[D]One o'clock in the [A]morning
[D]Scroll one more page down the [E]feed
[A]One o'clock in the [C#m]morning
There's a[D]nother chapter to [E]read[Esus][E]

The [F#m]sunrise can wait till I'm [A]ready
Can you [D]please put the planet on [E]hold
[A]Day after day the [D]same old routine
Per[A]haps has be[E]gun to get [A]old

[A]Day after day the [D]same old routine
Per[A]haps has be[E]gun to get [A]old

Ah the nitty-gitty… we often wish for excitement and a break from the routine, but forgetting the comfort offered by it we risk a headlong plunge into an empty search for stimulus.

I had to listen to this one because one of the first songs I ever wrote in Spanish is called “Es la una de la madrugada” - I reckon you can guess how that translates. :)

Yes, the dawn & sunrise fixes are good. The song sounds good, even if the situation is mostly past tense for me.

I like this! Especially the change to dawn, that works really well.

i didnt pick up on the second meaning of morning, which i expected to be mourning. oh well, that didnt reduce my enjoyment of this lovely song, that had nothing of the grind it in. in fact, it was rather chipper, carried along by an affable melody and bright-eyed voice. since i fo to bed at 8 or 9, i often wake at 2 or 3, write a song and go back and sleep until 6.

This is such a cheerful lament for the same old routine! I enjoyed the melody and your singing and your take on that "what am I doing up at this time of night?" old question. Nice song.

Great tune. Love the strumming and the harmonica and the vocals are great.

What do you think about, in the bridge, making a full hour past. Then the next verse starts ' two o'clock in the morning'...
