My dad started playing the cello when he turned 50, about the same age I started writing song. Maybe it's some kind of suppressed gene or something. I feel like the music captures something of what interests me most about the postcard - the way the umbrella holder is looking away from the cello - like he's had a fight with his beloved and is not speaking to her, but still keeping her dry.

This reminds me of my dad because he was a cellist although I never heard him play the cello. The only time he ever played it in all the time we lived in the same house (8 years) we (the kids) had to stay far away. That cello in the picture looks really weird, like it's in a case, but not. I remember my dad making or repairing his cello case with fibreglass. Also, we had a harmonium back then and the music sounds a lot like kids playing a harmonium who don't know how to play a harmonium. Basically, very evocative...

Oh this is sick - I feel myself walking down this cobblestone street in the rain, traffic sounds around me, the hum of disjointed bits of conversation I pass on my way to stumble across this guy. And it comes with its own album art! Okay, I feel like I need to make a series of songs in response to images now - thanks for the inspiration! 😀
