Harsh Mistress

Liner Notes

I'd been wanting to write more metal this FAWM and I just got a new 7 string guitar two days ago that I immediately tuned to drop A. It probably needs some action and/or truss rod adjustment as you can hear the rattling of the low string in the opening clean section.

This was my first time writing a full song and then later coming up with lyrics to it. The process is backwards to me, but I know other people do it all the time, so it was good to practice coming up with melodies without words..

Lyrics inspired by this thread about what you've learned about yourself during FAWM. https://write.fawm.org/forums/3320?highlight=learned
I wrote down some meditations about how I always have to be open to inspiration and willing to work when the muse wills it, but also that it's tiring stuff and the muse is a harsh mistress.

Lyrics

(Someone asked)
What have I learned
From all this
I have done

She made me see
What there is
To be won

Her voice is calling
Can’t you hear it

I am her vessel
I must await her
Wait in the darkness
I long to be filled

(Take my advice)
Look for the words
When they hook
In your eye

Steal every phrase
When its thorns
Sting your side

You must be ready
She is calling

I am her vessel
I must await her
I hear her calling
I am open wide

I like the originality of what you do here. Guitar playing and sound as well as the vocals too. Really nice combination! Those little guitar licks at the changes are genius.

Some really tasty metal riffs here. Love your voice with it, a very awesome complete sound. Love the “crash out” before the second verse… really adds to the ambiance of the piece.

Well Done! Really enjoy your voice! Works well with the riffs. Really like the tonal changes and guitar sounds.

She sure is! Always melody first with me, so interesting to hear this from you if you normally start at the other end. Good crunchy guitar and a great memorable lyric.

You're a (great) poet. So it must've been weird to write music first. That's inspiring me to try the same thing...I also always start with lyrics, then comes a sense of rhythms and pace and melody, then chords, then filling it all out.
I love the sound of the new guitar at the start!

Damn dude this is heavy and I love the 'look for words when they hook in your eye,' what a visual! I definitely vote for more metal from you this rocks dude!

Oh yes, that extra string makes it heavy! Good idea to use an odd meter to complete that riff. I definitely get the feelings of modern days death bands. You added some interesting phrases that remind me of baroque inspired metal. Mission accomplished this definitely doesn't sound grunge.

Music first and then lyrics? Yup. That's me all the time 😄
The chugga-chugga riff in the verses is rock solid. Kinda reminds me of Amon Amarth, tho I'm pretty sure thats not the vibe you are necessarily after, particularly with the angular riff that follows the vocals. Now THAT is quality riffage!
Isn't it fun to have that extra string?

Quality chugging riffage goodness, especially when the drums are a bit more present. I quite like this. Some tasty runs, too. This is quality. 😀

Nice write! The image of the muse as a cruel but lovely object of desire is striking.

Cool heavy tones from your new axe!
