Lyrics

The Green Lady and the Hoya

(Close your ears, Mom)

Okay, so I was high this one time
So high
And I talk to dead people all of the time
You should know these things about me

I was in the magical gardens nursery,
Near the oldest yew in the state
--but the oldest yew died
--I met a man at my reunion who has skiis made from it
He was high on shrooms at the time when he told me
But not me, and I’m in the shop
Because I got that garden shop birthday money
Two hundred dollars
I look up and I say,

“Hiya, Hoya!
You’re old and you’ve had many babies I see
But they took them away
I know just how you feel.
You pretty, sexy thing
I’m gonna take you home
Never going to cut your children
I’ll let your family roam all over my Pacific Northwest Midcentury
Bask in that lighting
Big cedar energy

That’s not when the hoya talked back
That was later that night
When I was high –so high that night
And I was shuffling down the hall
To my bath
And I felt this little tendril grab hold
It was the hoya
It grabbed me
It held me

It spoke to me

Just in my mind,
Where no one else could hear
It said, O thank you, Green lady
All I’ve ever wanted was to roam free,
With my children up a big cedar tree.

I get why you don't want your mother to listen, lol. Very different idea, very surreal. Love it.

What a beautiful rambling funny song! I can imagine it going down really well live with lots of space for improvisation. Sweet details throughout, and actually a great vocal melody too. I had fun with this one.

Loved it. So meandering, so personable, so... green! Nice work. 😀

I loved that you repeated the direction to your mom like you knew she wouldn't listen the first time. This is great! Your vocal delivery hooked me from the jump and I followed along for the whole ride. So many great lines: I met a man at my reunion who has skis made from it, garden birthday money, big cedar energy (I'm in Portland with two big cedar trees on my property so I felt very seen here). This is just so much fun, thank you for being a part of my skirmish!

What a witty tender song by the Green lady. Plants are grateful to those who tend them well!

This was a stationary trip! I love the conversation and the cadence of it all. I can feel how trippy this was.

Holy charming! What a kindness giving a single mother Hoya freedom without and threat of child protectionism coming into play. Beautiful guitar and your voice has so much character and confidence, love it!

I love the cadence of some of your lines. Really enjoyed this one! such a story.

What a journey you take us on! I love the trippy nature of this song and the stream of consciousness feel to the flow of the lyrics. I really love the connection with the Hoya plant. Lovely gentle guitar and gorgeous vocals.

Oh wow what a trip, the verby guitar and vocal phrasing are super.

I'll never look at my hoya the same way ever again, and I won't turn my back! :)
