Update: I finally finished a 50/90! And I'm halfway through my masters program. Please send good vibes that I can FAWM while also completing my edTPA.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I GRADUATED!! I finally have a bachelor's degree in music education, and I just started an accelerated grad program to get my master's by next June.
My undergrad thesis project dealt with tapping into creativity and overcoming the inner critic, and I'm going to put all those theories to use and finally finish a 50/90. This is the year, I can feel it.
You can read my thesis paper here: https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/honorstheses/1343/
And you can join the Bad Song Club here!
What is Bad Song Club?
In a nutshell, BSC is permission to write a song without having to worry if it's "good enough." Self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and writer's block all derive from an underlying suspicion that what we do isn't as good as it could be, and it can stop us from writing anything at all. This is problematic since, as we all know, practice makes progress. BSC is practice. It's not a commitment to *only ever* write bad songs; it's just a weekly excuse to play in the sandbox for a while.
Instrumentation:
- Guitar
- Tenor/concert ukuleles
- Bari uke
- UBASS
- Accordion
- Mandolin
- Ocarina
- Recorder
- Clarinet
- Violin
- aux percussion
- harmonies up the wazoo
- MIDI everything
Carley, you are so accomplished, brilliant,creative and on and on.
I have seen your name over time, but our paths didn't cross.
I made it a point to listen to you, and I love your work !
[avatar]
What an awesome concept - very 10,000 hours style.
I'll be checking out some of your stuff later tonight. :)
[avatar]
Thanks for listening to ButterNubbin, and the amusing description of what it brought to mind πŸ˜€
[avatar]
Hi, I just sent you an email (with an mp3) for a possible collab idea! (no worries either way, but I thought you might like to do something with it) - Mike S
[avatar]
remember that idea from the slackchat of the 'placeholder lyric'? well I ran with it, thanks! https://write.fawm.org/songs/289318
[avatar]
Hi Carley!
Just checking in on the morph - let me know if you need more time or if I should pass it along to the next person. 😊
[avatar]
Thank for the listen/comment on My Buddy Is Gone (Bad Song Club) (if you can't break the 4th wall during FAWM.. when can you! πŸ˜„
Just finished reading your thesis paper. Thanks for making that available. I really loved that quote by Orson Welles off the top. As a therapist, I think you're right, those principals have so much practical application to mental health and wellbeing. I enjoyed the improv piece as well, coming from Second City in Toronto, myself. The part about externalization stood out to me too, but even more than externalizing inspiration, I was thinking about externalizing the inner critic, as in, anthropomorphizing it. It sounds like you've already begun to do that in the educational song you spoke of towards the end. Anyway, really cool stuff! How's the master's program going?
[avatar]
Thank you for tracking my descent into madness. Send chocolate.
[avatar]
Congrats on the triple FAWM! You are CRUSHING it! #teamcarleyisawesome
[avatar]
Hey, perhaps are you up for a collab? I have something that made me think of you. E-mail or FB message me :)
[avatar]
Hey Carley - so I kinda wanna take part in the Bad Song Club, but since I just do instrumentals...I dunno. Got any advice for someone like me when it comes to the Bad Song Club who just makes electronic instrumentals?
[avatar]
Hi Carley! I was at an open mic in the Boston area last night and was trying to get fellow performers to check out FAWM. One of them said, "Oh, I think I knew someone who does that". I asked who, not really thinking it would be a name I recognized (there are so many FAWMers, and a lot I'm not familiar with). He said "Her name's Carley...." and I said "Carley Baer?" "Yeah, that's her". It was Nick LaFauci-- I guess you both used to play the Burren in Somerville?
[avatar]
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees (please)
Thank you!
[avatar]
Cool...Wasn't sure if it was an oversight. Can't wait to hear what you do.
[avatar]
I just read the comments first challenge in the forum link. It states you are supposed to present a title to the song first. Not sure the really matters but peoples comments may vary depending on the given title. What a fun idea for a challenge. You should have a blast...
[avatar]
Thanks for your warm welcome and hosting the bad song club. I'm glad you enjoyed my entry. This feeling of being stuck is a great images. I may finish that draft later :) and congrats for winning FAWM
[avatar]
Yes. This is the year. Let's do it! If you've got an ideas, send me an email!
[avatar]
Beautiful, Carley. I’ll revise the lyrics to reflect the changes you made!
[avatar]
Carley, I have an idea for a song called She Was My Angel which I heard one of my therapy clients say yesterday, I 'll do some lyrics and save it as a collab for us.
[avatar]
I hope some time we can collab. I love your voice and songs!
[avatar]
Carley, if I write out lyrics and save the song for you to add music plus any lyrical reworking you would like, could we collaborate this way? If you want to suggest a topic, go ahead.
[avatar]
sent you an email :)
[avatar]
Hello. I dropped your postcard off at the post office today, so it is on its way! I will give no explanations or spoilers. But, if you don't get it in a reasonable amount of time I have photos of the front and back as instructed. Enjoy!
[avatar]
Congrats, welcome to the personhood of insane music educators, really doing god's work (little g intentional ;) ). Looking forward to reading the thesis when I get a few moments to rub together. Always enjoy your stuff.
[avatar]
Hi Carley,
I have seen your name for years, but haven't connected until I read your comments on vocal exercises.
Congratulations on your degree.
I have been singing all my life, starting with alto in choirs.
I am up there in age and am still fortunate enough to be able to perform.
Because of my age, I have to be more diligent so I can keep going.
Happy for any info, and I love your approach
[avatar]
