Liner Notes

Woke up early and this little vignette happened before breakfast. I try not to argue with the first song that appears during FAWM.

I rarely remember anything about my actual dreams, but this feels like something I could have dreamed. I like it when a song makes me feel something. This one accomplishes that for me.

#acoustic #onetake #dream #saturdaymorningvignette

Lyrics

We were gathering stones in a stream
you had your back to me
what does it mean to dream?

I never saw your face
but I knew you anyway
there is no mistake

You are a part of me
Time is just the way
the leaves fall from the tree
but the roots wait for spring

The scent before it rains
the medicine I take
to keep the pain away

I heard you call my name
it startled me awake
I felt the sunlight on my face

This does sound like a song you'd sing in the morning with a steaming cup of coffee, overlooking the snow-covered fields. A lovely contemplation of the mind's events the night before. Plus a lot of mystery in so few lyrics! I dig it.

hurrah for the one-take, and for not questioning FAWM ideas too closely. As ever, I admire how much emotional impact you can get out of such uncluttered playing and singing. Simplicity at its best, especially as married to lyrics that are uncluttered and direct yet somehow (yes, totally) dreamlike and a little mystical.

I like it when a song makes me feel something too. This one feels so poignant full of longing. I like how it isn’t clear if the You in the song is dead or gone or away or asleep. Time is just the way and the medicine I take are such beautiful lines, and I love the way the guitar has it’s own voice.

Beautiful poetic folk! Love the imagery and calming feel. 👏🎶

What a tender and poignant lyric. You say so much here without needing to say very much. Gosh, this one is hitting me right in the heart. I absolutely love it.

This is so pretty. Beautiful laid back guitar that allows the emotion in your voice to come through. The lyrics are really lovely.
Inspiring stuff.

Absolutely beautiful , and such a simple song. Loved it

Beautiful, Phil. Just a handful of words and a few spare notes of guitar, but you can see for miles from here.

So beautiful, gentle, and (for lack of a better word) dreamlike. Love the deep metaphor of "the leaves fall from the tree/ but the roots wait for spring" (and the way that time is "just the way" that happens). How the inchoate images and lines add up to a bigger love/dream is gorgeous.

Your voice always soothes me Phil. Love this beautifully delivered song. Stripped down and beautiful.

@axl
There's a simple reason why I enjoyed this song: your voice always teases out emotions in me, Phil. Thanks for a little morning tear.

The sound of your voice and your melodic choices are the medicine I take to keep the pain away. "Never saw" (because of the whole always/never thing) made me wonder about "couldn't see" as an alternative. Rockstar, time is just the way the leaves fall from the tree. These roots are strong.

As soothing as a lullaby and mysterious as a dream. Two minutes of time lavishly decorated. Coming back for another two.

I felt everything in this song. I felt it in the words, but more so in the gaps between. The pacing is perfection.
[avatar]
It makes me feel something too....envy of your talent to create such beautiful sounds and words 😉. No honestly Phil this is just sumptuously gorgeous in its simplicity.
[avatar]
If poetry captures a moment, this is poetry, beautifully sung to gorgeous music. Go Phil Go!

Giving me all the feels. Such a classy vocal, as ever. Love the impressionistic nature of the lyrics - turning back the curtain just a touch but never quite enough, like a dream I guess. Sensational work, Phil.

So many of your songs are, in part, glorious because of your stunning performing abilities.

I think a stray dog singing these lyrics would still be powerful and moving. This is writing. Feelin' a bit o' envy, my good man. Lovely lovely.
[avatar]
This is just lovely. It feels like a song that's been around forever.
[avatar]
Dammit, Norman, you are NOT going to make me cry....

Maybe next year.

❤️

Woah. This is great. Very delicate but beautifully played. Loads of emotion here. Bravo.
[avatar]
It's fraking amazing how beautiful you make everything sound. Love the imagery in the lyrics.
[avatar]
Achingly gorgeous, Phil. Simple and lovely poetry.
[avatar]
Lovely, lovely stuff. You definitely caught the dream feeling here. You were wise not to argue with this one.
[avatar]
Stunning all around. Gorgeous arrangement and wonderfully crafted lyrics. A lovely gem
[avatar]
Oh gosh, this is gorgeous. Yay for pre-breakfast inspiration! This absolutely feels like a dream, I know exactly what you mean.
[avatar]
Beautiful writing and especially singing. This lyric has that perfect touch of imagery that leads to imagination. I can feel it.
[avatar]
Beautiful, poetic, cinematic, dreamlike. Great start for FAWM.
[avatar]
Great start! The feel and tempo are perfect for a dream! And the sparceness for a lack of a better word of the guitar plays with the lyrics well. Love the never saw your face lines!
[avatar]
I like it when a song makes me feel something, too. Thanks for making it happen with this one!
[avatar]
I adore the slow way you let these images and feelings sink in. And what a chorus, wow!
[avatar]
Achingly beautiful here. Love the "roots will wait for spring" line. So many visuals. You're inspiring me to just let whatever out for a first song.
