Liner Notes

It is A Time to be #trans and alive right now. I don't know how much I'll be writing about this for this FAWM, but it felt important to set the tone with something #queer and realistic-but-encouraging.

Lyrics

They look at us and say we're broken
As if their hatred makes them whole
To them we seem illegible
But we represent liberation

I will not say, "Be not afraid"
For the world is dark and terrifying
And there is real and present danger here
But you should know you're not alone
As we navigate these systems dying
Together we will make it through the fear

They look at us and scream in terror
As if we signal armageddon
We are sacred messengers
Declaring an end to oppression

I will not say, "Be not afraid"
For the world is dark and terrifying
And there is real and present danger here
But you should know you're not alone
As we navigate these systems dying
Together we will make it through the fear

I will not say, "Be not afraid"
For the world is dark and terrifying
And there is real and present danger here
But you should know you're not alone
As we navigate these systems dying
Together we will make it through the fear
Together we will make it through the fear

beautifully put. that first line in the chorus is really effective. i love the sentiment, it's not about not being afraid. it's about coming together and making the world someplace better

Love this lovely, realistic, beautiful song. Thank you for sharing it!

This line to: "We are sacred messengers
Declaring an end to oppression"

EXACTLY. You're the opposite of what evangelicals are declaring.
[avatar]
Wow... this hits home, right from the spot-on opening lines. Grounding yet hopeful. Thank you for this, Alyx, and for invoking this space for so many lovely and supportive comments. Together we will make it through... we have always existed, we are part of the human family, and we're not going anywhere. β€πŸ§‘πŸ’›πŸ’šπŸ’™πŸ’œ

You're my favorite sacred messenger. 😘

You've got some seriously powerful words here.
[avatar]
sacred messengers indeed. What a powerful and beautiful start my friend. i hope we will make it through. i'm here to fight!
[avatar]
β€œWe are sacred messengers.” Yes, you without a doubt absolutely are. Thank you for such a beautiful and tender first song. I am heartened by how many of us I see on here writing songs to resist.
[avatar]
Achingly powerful, and a fantastic job doing that in one take too! I am SO here for the trans songs of solidarity and resistance. The only way through is together. πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ

It is indeed A TIME :( And this is A SONG that smattered by heart in two πŸ’” Well done on a great first piece Alyx!

@heid
That hit.
Your voice is so tender and your words ring true. Much love from a fellow trans fawmer.
[avatar]
I wonder why everyone's first songs this year are so heavy? ...oh, yeah. (gestures at everything) But, seriously, you captured it: It is the togetherness that will get us through this. Somehow.
[avatar]
Beautiful. We are sacred messengers. πŸ’œ

A very beautiful song filled with pain that hits to the core. Thank you for sharing this and I hope you are able to continue expressing yourself in ways that feel best this FAWM.
[avatar]
Those are such raw, emotional words filled with pain and frustration. I'm truly sorry you're dealing with this. It shouldn’t have to be this way. Please stay strong; this difficult time will pass. Your performance is incredible, shedding light on such an important issue.

I've been sitting with the vibe your song hit me with since listening to it early yesterday.

This hit hard and as I give it a third listen this morning... there are tears welling up in my eyes. The next four years are going to be so hard. And common refrain I've seen trans elders online say about the massacre that happened in the 80s with AIDS epidemic the Reagan Administration dallied on and allowed to fester is "we'll get through this by staying connected. Being in community with each other." Basically what your song says... "Together we will make it through the fear."

This was a good one Alyx. Powerful.
[avatar]
We surely aren't in a happy time and I was struggling with this yesterday when writing my first song. Your line, "I will not say, "Be not afraid", For the world is dark and terrifying" is exactly what I'm feeling and I had no response for that yesterday with my song. But you put it right, "Together we will make it through the fear". Gripping song. Beautiful melody.
[avatar]
Very touching emotional song, with an important message.. imagine a world when humans just accept each other and celebrate each others differences! Have a great FAWM πŸ™Œ

Together we will make it through the fear.

That line says so much.

@bee
I really love your chorus. It feels inclusive and relatable to all. I look forward to your FAWM songs each year and am grateful this was the first song I got to listen to this month. Thanks for sharing your experience and strength.
[avatar]
You are not alone, there are more good than bad, well said again in your lovely listenable manner!
[avatar]
Beautiful and powerful and a gentle, comforting hug. So well done.
[avatar]
Oh Alyx; I've been thinking of you. The chorus here -- and the way you contrast the inability to tell people (you/we) not to be afraid and the reassurance that you/we are not alone -- is powerful.
[avatar]
As said earlier gentle and powerful, I cannot really imagine how stressful and scary these current times must be for you and those that don’t fit into the narrow mould of them….
But I like that you give some hope in the lyrics
[avatar]
@frey
Thank you for writing something so relatable!! Love the message in the chorus
[avatar]
I wish there wasn't so much truth in these lyrics – but, since there is, I'm glad you wrote them. Understated but powerful. <3
[avatar]
Helll yeaaaaaaa let's be trans and ALIVE 😀 I feel very much the same. We are sacred messengers!!! I also really like "I will not say, 'Be not afraid' / For the world is dark and terrifying." A heartfelt tune for getting us through this dark night.
[avatar]
Most of us don't have the courage to be truly honest. Core shame, concealed and cocooned, is a cancer of the soul. It makes me happy, that you were born, that you're here with us, that you can bless us with your beauty and compassion, that you can be a hero for us all.
[avatar]
<3 <3 <3
My heart goes out to you. Especially now. We need community and chosen family now more than ever.

As a song this is so good. So soft and subtle and delicate. It literally had me tearing up. I love this so much.
[avatar]
I love the power of these lyrics paired with the softer tone! I also really appreciate your realistic approach to the subject, I find overly hopeful statements less powerful these days.
[avatar]
πŸ₯² I am very aligned with this message, and aspire to write some songs like this myself this year. We need more hope and unity!
[avatar]
Congratulations on writing the first song that made me actually cry this year :') <3 I needed this.
[avatar]
Thank you so much for writing this. Gentle but powerful, it’s giving space for fear and grief, but coming back to strength and community. ❀️
[avatar]
I needed this today. Wonderful way to set the tone for this FAWM. The only way out is through, and the only way through is together πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™
