Liner Notes

this is about me keeping track of my income as a sole proprietor, an artist and audio engineer and music production teacher, etc. ITS HARD TO DO! I have a bunch of tiny income streams that make taxes terribly annoying, but I'm always trying to improve every year in the way that I calculate and keep track of all of my business expenses and income and whatnot.

Leave tips in the comments. haha seriously though, if you do, thanks!

Musically, I wanted to play everything and try to do each thing in one take and just make a messy garage rock band style demo, which it is, but my bass is hiding in my closet and i wanna throw this online, so unfortunately its a bassless song as of now.

p.s. I havent played bar chords OR drums in a long ass time. it was fun but so rusty and my hand hurt after - hence the "holy shit" commentary at the end.

The title and the "laundry and taxes" line were completely inspired by the scene in Everything Everywhere All At Once when Fancy Waymond says, "In another universe, I would have loved just doing laundry and taxes with you."

Lyrics

i thought i was doing well
rows and columns all filled out
I thought I was keeping track
And keeping up

I thought I was pretty good
At adding up the categories
I thought everything looked
Like it should

[bm, c, Em, A, Bm, em, c]
But here we are now
Completely recalculating
Finding all my past mistakes
And now realizing
We have to find another way
To prevent all this work
And everything will okay
Moving forward

Sometimes I feel like
We just do laundry and taxes
But I don’t think I need more
Excitement than that

Sometimes I feel proud
Of how organized I am
And now I know that all those times
It was silly to think that

Because here we are now
Completely recalculating
Finding all my past mistakes
And now realizing
We have to find another way
To prevent all this work
And everything will okay
Moving forward

(holy shit)

Your voice and style reminds me so much of Josie and the Pussycats! I love the vibe of this one. Glad you’re back on FAWM this year!

Hahaha! Love it! Cracked up when you say "holy shit" at the end! Great and fun!

Great song, Katie! I think I wanna do some Liz Phair inspired stuff with you cause you can nail that sound. This needs to be finished one day. April 15th release??? :)

What a nice production. Tough topic to make nice music to. You do a great job and the vocals are spot on.

Hooks as far as the ear can here. Great harmonies. Moving forward for sure.

You've turned laundry and taxes into a delicious, candy-pop song. I never thought I'd ever say that sentence. It's just delicious and those harmonies are just - yes, yes yes!

(I made a Google sheet template with nifty formulas to help keep track of all the things - wish I could share it it's all Canadian-taxes oriented!)

Haha. Yes. Feel this. Love the loose garage rock feel. Chorus really pops! Super catchy and sweet. 🧺🎸🎶

Love the harmonies and the "messy" nature of it. Feels imperfect in the perfect way! Very catchy tune

(holy shit) fo sho! Love it! On repeat and looking for the FAWM-artist tipping jar. That would be a great new feature!

I like this a lot. Something universal found here in the everyday. nice harmonies, too.

Love this. It has a cool Liz Phair feel about it. I like the one take approach. It gives the whole thing more character; especially the bit where you laugh.
The choruses are really catchy and the harmonies work so well.
You have a beautiful voice. Very well done!

Haha. Love the profanity at the end! 😂
