What If Smells Could Rhyme?

by @anthonykapfer

Liner Notes

i had a hard time today. i started a song that i didn't end up finishing, so i started messing around with some drop tuned doom metal riffs, and i threw this together. it's a loose jam i did with some virtual drummer thing on garageband.

there's kind of a key change towards the end because i accidently played the wrong note and liked it.

i'm playing the guitar and "bass" together at the same time using an octave pedal.

i did one pass on the lead vocals and one pass for the backup vocals.

i had some random thought in my notes. it said "what if smells could rhyme?" i thought that was a dumb enough concept to go with this very dumb piece of music. together i almost like it

Lyrics

what if smells could rhyme?

what would it be like if smells could rhyme?
would they smell the same all of the time?

sniff it!

Yeah! This is sweet! If you're gonna do it you gotta go all the way! I get an old Primus vibe too. And I really like that video footage.

Love that riff. It's like melodic doom metal. All the random yelping sounds you make are great. This has a great groove.

I’m using all 6 of my brain cells on the concept…it’s like smells trigger memories…so maybe if you really abstract rhyme it could be like “farts and burnt coffee make me think of post office” farts and coffee rhyme…or is there a smell Rosetta Stone… is smell a language in its own right the same way that pitch in music is really just hyper speed polyrhythms?

Btw there are videos of dudes showing how to make pitches out of different polyrhythms and it is crazy…if you’re into weird nerd shit like that…

This track is grumpy and sludgey and perfect. Wonderful.

What a happy accident on that key change. Rad! The video is too cool as well. Doom makes me smile lol, that shouldn't be the case right?

This sounds like the Seattle sound before it got big--a truly dirge-y take on arena rock--like back when Soundgarden covered Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom" live. Not taking itself too seriously because it's a big dumb sound.

Perfect for the next time my neighbours are getting high and their weed cloud comes in my window.

I haven't listened to doom in a while and this is making me want to do so more often. Sick riffs man.
